Project Assistant at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology

University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with diverse knowledge. 58,000 students and 6,800 employees make the university a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching are conducted across large knowledge areas - from molecule to human. The activities consist of five sections: pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry.

The Department of Neuroscience and Physiology is now seeking a project assistant for an intermittent position, located at the Section for Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

We are a research group focused on neurodegenerative diseases where we try to find both new ways to diagnose the disease and to understand the molecular mechanisms that contribute to the degeneration of nerve cells. We use patient material, cell models, and zebrafish in our work. The part of the group working with zebrafish is located at Sahlgrenska Hospital and is looking for a person to take care of the zebrafish and the facility where they are kept.

Responsibilities

We need a collaborator for the care of our zebrafish that we use in our research to study the formation of the nervous system. We are looking for someone who is, for example, a student and can work during weekends and holidays, and who is passionate about caring for aquatic systems and enjoys freshwater fish! With us, you will work flexibly in a small team where communication and collaboration are crucial. The work involves maintaining the fish, general oversight of the aquariums' function, and their water quality. The work is performed on an hourly basis. You should be able to organize and independently carry out your own daily work in consultation with your supervisor.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • You should be available on weekends and other holidays
  • Responsible and able to work independently
  • Good communication skills in English (both spoken and written)
  • Understanding of and respect for animal welfare
  • The work requires physical capacity to handle heavier objects as the fish tanks weigh about 10kg

Meritorious:

  • Previous work with zebrafish or other aquatic animals
  • Completed LAS course
  • Technical skills

Great emphasis is placed on previous experience of similar work, e.g., work with fish or aquariums and personal suitability.

Employment

The position is a fixed-term employment (intermittent position) for 11 months. You will work hours as needed with placement until further notice at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date: as soon as possible or by agreement.
