Job Responsibilities

Emma Lundberg's research group, affiliated with KTH and located at SciLifeLab in Stockholm, conducts research in cell biology, spatial proteomics, and machine learning for image analysis.

The goal is to map the localization of proteins in time and space, create an understanding of how this affects various cellular processes, and contribute insights into how altered protein localization can contribute to disease processes.

The research group is responsible for the subcellular part of the Human Protein Atlas (HPA); a large Swedish research project that has systematically mapped human proteins in cells, tissues, and organs for over 20 years. Here, the subcellular distribution of human proteins in various cell lines is mapped using immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. The research group also applies the latest methods in multiplex immunostaining of cells and tissues, as well as develops various tools for image analysis, primarily through machine learning and AI-based models.

The employee will conduct research by working with cell and molecular biology methods, primarily in the form of cell culture and immunostaining of cells and tissues, confocal microscopy, and related data analysis. The employee will also contribute to establishing automated 'optical pooled screening' (OPS) as a method in the research group and apply this in their own research project. The research project will focus on the expression and localization of metabolic proteins and will be conducted in close collaboration with the team around HPA.

We are looking for someone with good collaboration and communication skills. You should also have the ability to work independently and take your own initiatives. You should be meticulous and accustomed to documenting your work appropriately, as well as having good analytical skills.

Qualifications

Requirements

• PhD degree or foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in biotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology, biomedicine, or a related field. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made.
• Good theoretical knowledge in cell and molecular biology.
• Experience in laboratory work with cell and molecular biology methods.
• Excellent command of English in both written and spoken form, as this language is used for communication within the research group as well as for scientific publications and presentations.
• Good ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary research team.
• Good communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative to drive research projects.

Meritorious

• At the time of application, no more than three years since obtaining a PhD or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD.
• Experience in fluorescence microscopy.
• Experience in culturing human cell lines and hiPSCs.
• Experience working with pipetting robots.
• Experience in immunostaining of cells and tissues.
• Experience in image analysis using tools such as CellProfiler, R Bioconductor, ImageJ, and machine learning models.
• Experience in genetic (CRISPR) screening.
• Ability to maintain an efficient and meticulous working method.
• Good analytical skills.
