The Role of Bioinformatician

We are looking for an experienced bioinformatician with a focus on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for a shared role where you will work 50% in diagnostics at the Molecular Biology Laboratory (Laboratory Medicine) and 50% with research support within the region. Your tasks will include both diagnostic work and research support. In diagnostics, you will work with sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene for identification of bacterial species as well as typing with whole genome sequencing for contact tracing and infection control. It may also involve targeted sequencing for personalized cancer treatment. Within research support, you will contribute to the analysis of complex biological datasets in clinical research, focusing on diagnostics, disease mechanisms, and treatment.

You will manage and structure data, analyze and visualize biological datasets, and develop and maintain bioinformatics pipelines and infrastructures. An important part of the position is to maintain and further develop bioinformatics infrastructure, including installation, testing, and version control of analysis tools, as well as implementing automated processes. You may also be responsible for internal training in programming and bioinformatics tools.

Your Profile

We are looking for someone with experience working in a Linux environment and programming in Bash, R, Python, and Nextflow, as well as knowledge of container technologies (Docker, Singularity) and package management in Conda/Mamba. You should have experience working with both Nanopore and Illumina sequencing data and an understanding of common bioinformatics data formats and analysis tools. Documented professional experience in bioinformatics (>2 years) is a requirement, as well as the ability to develop reproducible bioinformatics pipelines and write well-structured, version-controlled code. We also value good collaboration skills and flexibility in a dynamic work environment.

Formal education in bioinformatics and experience in teaching and support within bioinformatics are advantageous. Knowledge of graphical bioinformatics tools such as SeqSphere and CLC Genomic Workbench, as well as experience with Ion Torrent sequencing data, is also a plus.
