Your Responsibilities

The Department of Computer Vision (CVL) is seeking an Assistant Professor in Machine Learning with a focus on motion analysis from video.

The Department of Computer Vision at the Institute of Systems Technology has a vibrant research environment with a total of 37 staff members, including 9 researchers, 17 PhD students, and several adjunct researchers. CVL conducts research and education at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels in machine learning within computer vision. The department has been recognized as one of Sweden's best AI research environments in Vinnova’s previous report, and LiU is Sweden's strongest AI university according to their latest report. We are active within WASP (Wallenberg), ELLIIT (Excellence Center), and LiU's profile area VDF (Visual Digital Futures). For more information about our work, please visit our website.

For this role, we collaborate with the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program, WASP, which is Sweden's largest single research program in modern times. An important part of WASP is an international recruitment program, and the current announcement aims to strengthen Linköping University specifically in the area of machine learning as part of the AI focus within WASP. The goal is to complement existing expertise in the field of computer vision with motion analysis from video.

As an Assistant Professor, you will work with machine learning with a particular focus on motion analysis from video. The assignment is directed towards research and development of methods and mathematical analysis relevant to motion analysis of humans and animals in 3D from video data. Other aspects of the position include a focus on research and development of methods and mathematical tools aimed at better understanding of theory and underlying mechanisms within statistical and deep learning-based systems. As an Assistant Professor, you are also expected to explore application areas within health and life sciences as well as security and digital forensics.

You actively contribute to the university's development work. Collaboration is an integral part of the university's research and educational mission. Collaboration in research occurs by disseminating, making accessible, and utilizing research.

The position may also involve administrative duties, such as managing invitations to local seminar activities. We encourage you to participate in and show interest in leadership assignments.

You will primarily work with research and doctoral education. Subject to independent decisions from WASP, funding for your salary and operations for 4 years is included, as well as funding for two postdoctoral researchers and two PhD students. You are expected to lead your own research group and engage in WASP's doctoral school, WASP's national meetings, and other activities. You are also expected to actively seek additional external research funding to secure the establishment of an independent research group. Approximately 20 percent of your duties will include teaching.

Your work includes following national and international developments in your subject area and other societal developments that are relevant to your work.

You are flexible and have the ability to navigate between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the professional development of the workgroup, collegial working methods, and social community. Being present and active is seen as essential for you to perform your tasks in the best way and thrive in the work community.

Your Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a PhD or equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, we seek someone who has obtained their PhD within the last five years.

For this position, special emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence, followed by pedagogical excellence, and then other skills that are assessed as equivalent.

Regarding scientific excellence, it is particularly meritorious to have demonstrated experience in project work within the subject, including the development of methods and mathematical models, publications, and the use of technical equipment for motion analysis.

Regarding pedagogical excellence, experience in supervising students and PhD candidates within the subject is particularly meritorious.

Documented competence in collaboration within research is also particularly meritorious for the position.

Other skills that will be assessed for this position include technical skills and the ability to collaborate in a group. Experience in programming machine learning models and hardware for positioning systems is particularly meritorious.

Since teaching and research largely occur in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English.

We are looking for a person with good collaborative skills, who works well with others and relates to them in a responsive and smooth manner. You listen and communicate constructively. You have the independence and courage to act according to your own convictions. You are outgoing and socially active in professional contexts, creating contacts and maintaining relationships. You easily adapt to changing circumstances, can quickly change your perspective and approach, and see opportunities in changes.
