Research Assistant in Applied Mathematics at Umeå University

Job Responsibilities

The work involves assisting the research project System-based Support for Analyzing Accessibility Changes at the Regional Level (SYRE) primarily with data processing and advanced statistical analyses of spatiotemporal processes.

The project's aim is to model and analyze how changes in accessibility affect regional economic development in different places and regions over time. The analysis is based on statistical evaluations of historical data from PIPOS Regional Analysis to identify patterns and causal relationships between altered accessibility in the transport system and effects in various locations.

The project is a collaboration between researchers at Umeå University, Mid Sweden University, and Luleå University of Technology. Currently, two people are working on the project at the university. As a research assistant, you will work for the research group on well-defined questions. The work also includes documenting and presenting solutions both in writing and orally, as well as participating in the research group's meetings.

Qualifications

To apply for the position of research assistant, you must be enrolled in a course at Umeå University and have at least 150 higher education credits in mathematics, mathematical statistics, programming, and other computational science subjects, of which at least 60 credits must be in mathematics and mathematical statistics and at least 60 credits in computer science and computational science subjects.

You should have an interest in research, possess social skills, and be able to work both independently and in a group. As a person, you are diligent, organized, and curious. Documented experience in scientific writing, such as a thesis, scientific publication, or similar, is advantageous. It is also beneficial to have taken courses in numerical methods and optimization.

About the Position

The position will be 25 percent of full-time during the period from June 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
