Car Swap: from Volvo V70 to Tesla Model Y

Recently, my close relatives decided to swap their 25-year-old Volvo V70 for a Tesla Model Y. The decision was made to reduce ongoing costs and increase safety with a modern electric car.

High Cost Became Lower Monthly Expense

The Volvo came with high monthly expenses – around 2200 SEK for gasoline, tax, and repairs. Tesla is currently running a campaign with 0% interest, making the swap attractive. After the down payment, the monthly cost for the Model Y ended up at 1615 SEK over 5 years.

Financing Option Monthly Cost Down Payment Term Residual Value (43%)
60 months 1615 SEK 219,000 SEK 5 years 236,500 SEK
36 months 1086 SEK 219,000 SEK 3 years

They also used my Tesla referral link and received a 5000 SEK discount and one year of free charging at Tesla's Superchargers. The switch to an electric car also meant reduced maintenance costs, as the Tesla has fewer moving parts.

Future Plan for Residual Value

The residual value after 5 years is estimated to be 236,500 SEK. The plan is to either buy out the car in cash or through a new loan at that time. Tesla cars tend to hold their value relatively well, which is an advantage for future financing.

Safety in Focus

The Model Y is equipped with modern safety features such as:

  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control

These features contribute to a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Appreciated Details

An appreciated detail is that their Model Y has a traditional turn signal lever, unlike my Tesla which has turn signal buttons on the steering wheel. These are small but important details that can make a big difference in user experience.

Improved Economy and Quality of Life

The switch from Volvo to Tesla means they get to drive a new, safe car at a lower cost than before. With 0% interest, reduced monthly expenses, and free charging for the first year, this is an investment that improves both economy and quality of life.

If you are considering a car swap and want to get a 5000 SEK discount and free charging for a year, feel free to use my Tesla referral link here.
