The Eye Clinic at Visby Hospital provides basic and, to some extent, highly specialized eye care for the approximately 60,000 inhabitants of Gotland. The department operates in close collaboration with other surgical and medical specialties. We continuously work to develop our services to improve care for the island's population.
We handle approximately 13,000–14,000 visits per year. Our services include general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, and a medical retina clinic with injection treatments. The department has primary day-time on-call responsibilities and partial weekend standby duty. Patients requiring highly specialized care are primarily referred to the eye clinics at St. Erik's Eye Hospital or the Academic Hospital in Uppsala.
We regularly host consulting physicians with specialized expertise in pediatric ophthalmology, corneal diseases, cataract surgery, and plastic surgery (e.g., tumor, eyelid, lacrimal duct, and strabismus surgery). The clinic is staffed by approximately 3–4 specialists and 1–2 resident doctors per week. The team also includes eye nurses, nurses, nursing assistants, optometrists, and orthoptists. The clinic is well-equipped with technologies such as multispot lasers, YAG lasers, Humphrey perimetry, and OCT.
As a nurse, you will gain both breadth and depth in your field, as Visby Hospital is the island's only emergency hospital and handles all eye patients on Gotland.
Your Responsibilities
The Eye Clinic at Visby Hospital is a small, well-functioning workplace with varied tasks and great opportunities for personal development. We work extensively in teams, and you will assist with procedures such as cataract surgeries, outpatient visits, injections, and pre-examinations before doctor consultations.
Based on your experience and education, you will perform independent measurements and examinations of the eye, including visual field tests, pressure measurements, fundus photography, and vision checks. Telephone advice is also part of the role. It is an advantage if you can perform eye injections after training, as this is a significant part of our operations and a delegated task.
We use the electronic health record system TakeCare, as well as Topcon and Haag-Streit imaging systems.
Who are you?
We are looking for you who are trained as an eye nurse or a general nurse with experience or a strong interest in working within eye care. You may also be an operating room nurse with an interest in ophthalmology who wishes to perform tasks outside the operating theater. For general nurses, experience in outpatient care is advantageous.
We expect you to have the ability and willingness to contribute to the development of our services and to bring new ideas. In your interactions with patients, you are trustworthy and empathetic. You have good teamwork skills, are receptive, and adapt your approach based on the individual and the situation. Personal suitability is of great importance.
A background check via an extract from the criminal record will be conducted prior to the hiring decision.
