Nature Warden for Norrbotten – Manage and Preserve Our Unique Nature

Are you a person with good experience of nature and the environment? Do you also have experience in management work, large carnivores, and extensive field experience? Are you a team player who can also work independently? Then you might be the one we are looking for!

As an employee here, you are a vital part of the work to manage and develop the nature values in our region. Your work contributes directly to preserving and strengthening biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the unique natural environments found here in Norrbotten.

You will belong to the Field Unit, which is part of the operational activities at the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten. The Field Unit's main task is to manage protected animals and nature areas, and to ensure compliance with laws and regulations. The work includes inventories of large carnivores, care and maintenance of nature types, facilities and trails, information efforts, and combating invasive alien species.

About the Job

Your working hours are spent mainly in the field. Some parts of the work are done as solo work, but to a large extent, you will work in a team or patrol with one or more colleagues. You plan your work together with your colleagues. Field operations run year-round and can be demanding in both summer and winter. As a nature warden, you are a team player who works closely with responsible case handlers to document in the field and carry out planned or emergent measures to ensure compliance with current management plans.

In your work, you will participate in protected hunting decisions, perform supervision, and manage national parks, nature reserves, and the state trail system. This involves both construction work and nature type maintenance, as well as planning these measures. You will also be responsible for documentation and reporting of completed work. We expect you to have experience working with digital tools and equipment.

The job involves significant travel to geographically remote areas. The Field Unit has the entire county as its workplace, and overnight stays are common.

You will also have contact and collaboration with Sami reindeer herding communities regarding issues related to the unit's tasks. The Field Unit is engaged in many of the agency's action projects, where you will become an active part of the operations.

The Field Unit also has an extensive supervisory mandate regarding:

  • Compliance with regulations in protected areas (national parks, nature reserves)
  • Off-road driving in prohibition and regulation areas, as well as above the cultivation limit
  • Illegal hunting of large carnivores

The work is constantly evolving, and tasks may change over time based on our mandate. Therefore, you need to be able to handle change. This also gives you opportunities to develop, broaden, and deepen your competence with us.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has suitable professional experience for the tasks
  • Has good physical fitness and experience traveling in forests and mountains under various weather conditions and seasons
  • Has good knowledge of animals, nature, and life in nature
  • Has good computer skills and is open to new operational support systems
  • Can express yourself politely, simply, and clearly, both orally and in writing
  • Has good experience with off-road driving (snowmobile/ATV), holds at least a B-driver's license, and has a snowmobile operator's permit

We are looking for someone who, with a non-hierarchical attitude, is self-motivated, driven, and responsible. We want you to take initiative, adapt to new ways of working, and plan the execution of tasks together with colleagues or independently.

Since you will have contact with many members of the public, we place great emphasis on social competence, judgment, and communication skills.

You will often handle sensitive information, so it is important that you have high integrity.

Merits

It is a plus if you:

  • Have knowledge of zoology, ecology, and large carnivores, a secondary school diploma, or post-secondary studies in ecological, biological, or forestry subjects, or other relevant work experience that the employer deems equivalent
  • Have knowledge of reindeer herding conditions
  • Have documented experience moving in high-alpine environments in winter
  • Have experience with public sector work
  • Have experience or training certificates in handling motorized manual tools

Personal qualities are important to us. It is a given that you contribute positively to our work environment and job satisfaction, and act according to the public sector values.

Good to Know

We use a six-month probation period.

If invited to an interview, you may be asked to complete a work test.

Since some positions with us require security clearance, you may undergo a security check before employment. This includes a security clearance interview and register control. For some positions, Swedish citizenship is required.
