Research Engineer at Grimsö Research Station

We are looking for an independent and meticulous person for the DNA laboratory at Grimsö Research Station. We are targeting you who are interested in the management and research of large predators. Using DNA methods, we provide various authorities with fact-based information that promotes sustainable predator management in Sweden, and through research, we increase the understanding of predator ecology.

About the Job

You will work in a team analyzing DNA samples from predators. The main project involves assisting management authorities with DNA analyses aimed at surveying and managing the wolf population in Sweden. In addition, DNA analyses are conducted on several other species and research projects, where your participation may be required.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Laboratory and analytical work, including DNA extraction from biological material from animals.
  • Genetic profiling (genotyping) and handling of SNP data to identify individuals and their kinship to other individuals in various populations.
  • Participation in reporting and the production of informational material.
  • Participation in research projects and the development of new methods/processes inside and outside the DNA lab.

All work will take place at Grimsö Research Station.

Your Background

  • An academic education in biology, equivalent to at least a Master's degree (MSc) with several courses in genetics and/or molecular ecology.
  • Good experience in extracting and analyzing DNA samples and molecular data.
  • Advanced knowledge of word processing programs, including Microsoft Word, and analysis programs, including Microsoft Excel and R for programming.
  • Knowledge of next-generation sequencing and the use of Python and bash scripts is advantageous.
  • Class B driver's license and access to a personal car.

It is a prerequisite that you have a methodical work approach, critical thinking, are meticulous, and possess analytical skills. Other important personal qualities for the job include good teamwork skills, a flexible and self-initiating work style, and the ability to handle multiple parallel tasks simultaneously.

About Us

Grimsö Research Station offers a unique working environment for studying wild animals and birds. In addition to the approximately 40 people working at the station, we are a gathering point that attracts visiting researchers, authority officials, and students. We are located in a research area of 13,000 hectares that we use for research and education. Here, there is broad expertise for studying wild animal ecology, lifestyle, life history, distribution, and genetic variation. We conduct research that is applied in the management of large animals and birds in Sweden. We have a large network of researchers and representatives from authorities and civil society organizations. Through publications and collaborations, we have a global reach of our unique knowledge about animal management and conservation.
