Acting Gardener at Uppsala Linnean Gardens

The Linné Garden, Linné's Hammarby, and the Botanical Garden at Uppsala University together form the Uppsala Linnean Gardens, Sweden's oldest botanical gardens. Here, we cultivate more than 9,000 plant accessions from all corners of the world. The primary task of the Uppsala Linnean Gardens is to care for the living collections and provide plant material and growing conditions for research and teaching at the university.

For 350 years, the Linnean gardens have combined botany, medicine, and horticulture into a pleasant and educational blend.

Job Responsibilities

The work involves most tasks found in a botanical garden, including the care of valuable plant material, creating environments in open ground, pruning, inventory and labeling, working with plant databases, etc. The work can be physically demanding at times. Weekend work may occur, as well as project work and participation in exhibitions and events. The work is carried out in close collaboration with our other gardeners and botanists and may take place at any of the three Linnean garden facilities.

Qualifications:

Gardening education or equivalent competence assessed by the employer. Practical experience working with diverse plant material with varying requirements for life and growing conditions. Documented good species knowledge, good knowledge of botanical nomenclature, and good knowledge of plant cultivation. Driver's license class B or higher, and documented experience using gardening machinery.

The job requires good organizational and teamwork skills, attention to detail, responsibility, drive, flexibility, and previous experience with database work. It is important that you can work independently and are creative. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

Merits

We would prefer that you, as an applicant, have good language skills in Swedish and English, as well as previous experience from employment at a botanical garden or similar institution.

About the Employment

The employment is fixed-term for 5 months. Full-time position. Start date as soon as possible or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
