Materials and Structures Expert in Aerospace Engineering – FOI
The Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defence and security to support Sweden's military and civil defence. Research spans several areas, such as underwater, cyber defence, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defence, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive agents), military platforms including weapons and protection, and security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defence capabilities.
Do you want to work to strengthen Sweden's defence and security? Do you want to work in an environment where you have the opportunity to make an impact? Do you want to have fun at work? Then perhaps you are our new colleague!
About the Position
You will join the unit belonging to Defence Technology. You will be part of the research activities where you lead and participate in research projects investigating how modern design and analysis methods can be used to characterize, simulate, test, and improve material and structural solutions for future military aircraft systems. The work aims to develop a broad assessment capability regarding multifunctional materials, material characterization, and process technology, as well as the field readiness and availability of materials.
Materials in military aircraft systems are exposed to high heat and heavy loads. New materials, new combinations of materials, and new process tools offer potential for performance gains that enhance capabilities, while signature aspects become increasingly important with maintained requirements for field readiness and operational availability. The field is broad, and the rapid development of computing power enables new design and analysis methods. There is also rapid development in the civilian sector, and it is important to understand how this can be translated into military applications.
You will function as a materials expert within the applied aerospace research activities, monitor and direct the research area, and support the activities through collaboration with other competencies at the agency.
Business travel is required to carry out project activities, meet with clients, and attend conferences.
About the Unit
You will join the Aerospace Engineering unit, which belongs to the Defence Technology department. Within the field of aerospace engineering, FOI conducts research and knowledge building in military aerospace engineering with a focus on aerospace assessment capabilities, flight signatures, and military aircraft system capabilities. This primarily concerns combat aircraft but also various types of unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopter systems, or hypersonic vehicles. The activities combine the system perspective and operational issues with aerospace engineering competence in disciplines such as fluid mechanics, structural and materials technology, flight signatures, flight mechanics, human-machine interaction, and more. Work is organized in both the analysis of threat systems and the synthesis of own future systems. The activities are in rapid growth with increasing demand.
