PhD Candidate in Archaeology at Campus Gotland

The Department of Archaeology, Ancient History and Conservation is seeking a PhD candidate in archaeology based at Campus Gotland in Visby.

The position involves being part of a dynamic and expanding research environment with just under one hundred staff in both Visby and Uppsala. The combined departmental environment includes seven main areas with teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels and doctoral education in archaeology, conservation, ancient culture and society, and Egyptology.

You will also be part of the already established interdisciplinary graduate school in sustainable development (GRASS).

Project Description

Digital Innovation for Sustainable Heritage (DISH) is an interdisciplinary project focusing on the use of digital methods for heritage to sustainably support Gotland's archaeological and built heritage in the face of challenges such as climate change, construction, tourism, and the risk of armed conflict.

Research Focus: Heritage Twins in Archaeological Practice

The aim of the project, which will result in a doctoral dissertation, is to develop innovative digital tools for sustainable heritage management.

Job Responsibilities

Doctoral education typically encompasses four years of net studies and is funded by employment as a PhD candidate. PhD candidates are expected to contribute to the department's work environment through regular attendance, engage in course reading and dissertation work full-time, and actively participate in the department's seminar activities. For further information, see the study plans that govern education within each main area. There may be opportunities to teach new courses on heritage and digital modeling or undertake simpler administrative duties at the department corresponding to a maximum of 20 percent, as agreed. The employment will be extended accordingly.

Requirements

Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has:

  • completed a master's degree in archaeology or has at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits in archaeology, or has acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way,
  • documented experience of two or more digital documentation methods for objects or environments, such as GIS, photogrammetry, structured light scanning, LIDAR, tomography, or digital/heritage twin technology.

Additional Qualifications

  • Skills in data analysis and data management,
  • basic skills in Python for machine learning tasks,
  • competence in digital modeling systems such as Blender, Unity, or Unreal Engine.

Regulations for PhD candidates can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§ 1-7 and in the university's rules and guidelines.

About the Position

The position is temporary, according to HF Chapter 5 § 7. The extent is full-time (100%). Start date 2026-08-15 or by agreement. Place of employment: Visby
