Investigator at the Swedish National Heritage Board
The Swedish National Heritage Board is Sweden's authority for cultural heritage issues. We work to ensure that cultural environments, cultural landscapes, cultural objects, and museums are preserved, utilized, and developed. Our mission is guided by the government's goals for cultural policy and the state’s cultural heritage work. Our operations are located in Visby, Stockholm, and Tumba, and we also conduct public activities at the visitor site Glimmingehus. We have about 250 employees.
The Museum Department consists of 6 units that promote development and collaboration in the museum sector and act as a driving and supportive force in matters concerning cultural objects and museums' work to preserve, use, and develop cultural heritage.
The department is also responsible for the operation of Glimmingehus and the Swedish Museum Service.
The Unit for Museums in Society (Mis) is responsible for coordinating museum issues and for compiling, disseminating, and developing knowledge to support museums. The unit is also responsible for work with museums and regional development, protection of cultural property in the event of crisis and war, cross-sector collaboration in museum issues, and monitoring the external environment.
We are now looking for an engaged investigator who wants to help drive the development of museums' role as a central force in a sustainable and democratic society. Your task will be to highlight how museums, especially at the regional level, function as engines for growth, education, and social cohesion. Together with colleagues and external partners, you will analyze and shape the future conditions for the important role of cultural heritage in societal building, creating bridges between political goals and the museums' unique and independent knowledge missions.
Your tasks
Your tasks will include leading and participating in investigation projects, including strengthening the position of regional museums in the work with cultural heritage issues, cultural heritage tourism, and other regional development. Through evidence-based information, analysis, and network building, you will actively contribute to strengthening knowledge and interest in the potential of museums and their societal mission among decision-makers and clients. You will also prepare and respond to inquiries from the government and various authorities, lead government assignments, and organize and facilitate meetings and seminars with relevant partners.
Your qualifications
We are looking for someone with an academic degree in cultural heritage and cultural environment, for example, with a focus on building preservation, cultural geography, cultural analysis, or other education deemed equivalent by the employer. You have experience in investigative work related to museums' missions, roles, and collaboration. You need to have a good understanding of the museum structure in Sweden and have experience with strategic work on these issues in museums or within municipalities/regions/county administrative boards. Experience in commissioned work or cultural heritage tourism is an advantage. You express yourself well and fluently in both spoken and written Swedish and English, have experience in communicative work, and are accustomed to representing your organization in external contexts. You are meticulous, structured, and have good analytical skills. You are ambitious and independent but are also used to collaborating broadly, creating networks, and building sustainable relationships. You are unpretentious, curious, and open to challenges.
Other
The position is a permanent employment with a 6-month probationary period. The placement is in Visby with the possibility of remote work for part of the working time. We welcome your application by 2026-03-31. Please mark your application with the diary number RAÄ-2026-1052.
