The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society becomes safer for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, remand facilities, and client transport.

The remand facility and prison in Kalmar together form the Kalmar operational area and are thus organizationally the same unit. Employees working in Kalmar serve intermittently at the remand facility and the prison depending on the needs of the operation. The prison in Kalmar has 77 places in security class 2, it is the oldest in the country and was built in 1852. The remand facility in Kalmar has 50 places. The remand facility and prison are located in central Kalmar, just a few minutes' walk from the central station. The Kalmar operational area has a total of about 130 employees.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service in Kalmar is growing. We have several new establishments planned for the coming years, including prisons in security classes 2 and 3 and a brand new remand facility. Currently, the central kitchen operates from the existing prison in Kalmar. Over the next 5-6 years, our kitchen organization in Kalmar will need to grow as new units open in 2026 and 2027. By 2030, a new prison will be completed in the southern part of Kalmar municipality, and the entire central kitchen will then operate from there in completely new kitchen facilities with a modern kitchen equipment. As a chef with us, you will thus be part of an exciting development in the coming years, where your input will be important for the development of the operation.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

We at the Kalmar operational area are now looking for a knowledgeable and creative chef to join our team! As a chef in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, you play a particularly important role in society. Your daily work has a direct impact on the health, well-being, and safety of our inmates.

With us, you will be part of a team of four chefs and a kitchen manager. As a chef, you primarily prepare food for inmates at the Kalmar prison and remand facility, but also for inmates in police custody and for staff. Your workplace is based at the prison.

The job responsibilities include the usual tasks in a large kitchen such as preparing, cooking, and portioning food, handling dishwashing and cleaning of kitchen premises, and performing self-checks in accordance with current legislation. Preparation of special diets occurs continuously.

The work is partly in collaboration with prison staff internally as well as external suppliers/inspectors. The position also includes the ability to communicate with and guide the inmates you serve.

You will work daytime according to a set schedule.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for someone who is confident, stable, and self-aware. You are calm and controlled in stressful situations and collaborate well with others. You have good judgment and take responsibility for your tasks as well as the overall situation. You also have the ability to take initiative and work independently. You have a passion for cooking and want to contribute to the continuous development of the prison's menu within given budget frameworks.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Restaurant or large kitchen education at the high school level or other education combined with experience deemed relevant by the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
  • The ability to express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish.

It is an advantage if you have:

  • Experience working in large kitchens.
  • Experience working with self-checks.
  • Experience working with special diets.
  • Experience working as a chef in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.
  • Relevant language skills.
  • Category B driving license.
