Department of Forest Ecology and Management

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on a project evaluating and developing rehabilitation of degraded rainforest and sustainable management in Borneo. This project was initiated in 1998 by Ingvar Kamprad to rehabilitate rainforest in Borneo that has been destroyed by fires and logging, and has since been carried out in close collaboration with IKEA, SLU, and the Sabah Foundation. The project includes trials and plots that evaluate rehabilitation and sustainable management of rainforest.

About the job

The position involves collecting, processing, and publishing data from the project, as well as follow-up inventories and contacts with local partners. Designing and establishing new trials may also be part of the work.

Your background

Applicants should have a PhD in biology, forestry, or equivalent, with a focus on tropical rainforest management and restoration. Good knowledge of forestry in the tropics, tropical ecology, and relevant database management and data analysis is required. Documented experience in fieldwork, project management, and analysis of inventory data from rainforests is an asset. The applicant should have relevant knowledge of inventory methodology, analysis methods, and software for analyzing biomass, biodiversity, species traits, and structure in tropical rainforest. Experience in forest economic analysis is also advantageous. Relevant contacts with researchers and collaborators in Sabah and internationally are also beneficial. The successful candidate should have demonstrated scientific competence in the field, for example through publications in scientific journals and participation in international meetings. Good command of English (spoken and written) is required, and knowledge of local languages is an asset.
