Postdoctoral Researcher in Oceanography with Biogeochemical Focus
Do you want to work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment and study how the ocean is affected by offshore wind power? Do you want your expertise to contribute to solutions for a more sustainable society and ocean, as well as a knowledge-based Swedish marine management? Then the oceanographic research unit at SMHI is for you.
The oceanographic research activities at SMHI are based on oceanography, the study of the ocean, and connect the ocean's physics with biological, geological, and chemical processes in the sea. The work includes marine modeling, analysis of observational data, and applied research related to socially relevant issues such as marine planning, ecosystem impact, and climate change. The research is conducted in close collaboration with other authorities and national and international partners.
About the Position
We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher in oceanography with a biogeochemical focus. A central part of the work is to quantify the impact of offshore wind power on the ocean's physics, biogeochemistry, and ecosystems. The tasks include generating driving data for models, conducting process and impact studies, and analyzing both model simulations and observations. The position involves research in marine modeling with a focus on the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The numerical three-dimensional ocean model NEMO-Nordic, which is linked to the biogeochemical model SCOBI, along with observational data, will be used in the work.
The work is primarily conducted within the framework of a mandate from the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HaV) and involves participation in all phases of the project – from planning and collaboration to analysis and reporting.
The role also includes presenting and communicating research results in various contexts. This involves publishing in scientific journals, presenting at conferences, and collaborating and exchanging knowledge with other experts and authorities, particularly with HaV. You will be part of a high-competence research environment where collaboration and knowledge sharing are a natural part of everyday life.
About You
We are looking for someone who has a PhD in oceanography or another area that SMHI deems equivalent. You need to have knowledge of ocean physics, as well as experience in the use and analysis of oceanographic models. Experience in programming and analysis, image processing, and statistical software, such as Python or similar high-level languages, is required. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required for the position.
Experience in the following areas is meritorious:
- Unix/Linux environments, NetCDF, Fortran, and Git
- Knowledge of ocean biogeochemistry
- Biogeochemical modeling and data analysis
- Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) in a Linux cluster environment
- Statistical analysis methods
- Documented experience in written and oral scientific publishing
- Good knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language is an advantage
You need to have permission to live and work in Sweden (for example, through EU citizenship).
Personal Qualities
To thrive and succeed in this role, we see that you have a strong interest in scientific questions in general and in marine and climate issues in particular. An interest in programming and oceanographic modeling, combined with an understanding of the societal relevance of the work and its importance for Swedish marine management and marine planning, is also central.
The ability to take initiative and drive the work forward is crucial, while the role requires good collaboration skills and a professional approach in joint projects. A structured working method, with the ability to plan, set goals, and meet deadlines, is a prerequisite for success.
Welcome with your application
Employment type: The position is a two-year fixed-term employment, with the possibility of a one-year extension and starting as soon as possible.
Location: The position is at SMHI's offices in Gothenburg or Norrköping. The position may involve travel, both nationally and internationally.
Application deadline: Sunday, February 8
