The County Administrative Board's approximately 300 employees work as the government's representative at the regional level. Our mission is to develop the county and ensure that national political goals are implemented in the region. We strive to be an authority free from discrimination and want to harness the qualities that diversity brings to our operations.

At the Water Unit, just over 40 employees work year-round, along with an additional 15-20 employees during the field season (May-October). Here, we broadly address issues related to water, fishing, and environmental monitoring in the county. This includes everything from restoring aquatic environments, liming, and fishing to water management, environmental analysis, and drinking water supply. The unit also operates its own water laboratory, which plays a central role in the county administrative boards' work with lime effect monitoring. The Water Unit is constantly working to increase the pace of actions and implementation in the county, both by providing grants for local water conservation projects and fisheries projects through fishery grants, and by seeking new water conservation projects within the EU's various environmental and fisheries funds. The unit is staffed with experts who are happy to share their knowledge.

We work with respect, professionalism, and openness for the county's residents – together for a sustainable future!

Description

We are looking for engaged and nature-interested individuals who want to work with water and fisheries management at the County Administrative Board in Jämtland County during the summer season of 2026.

With us, you will have the opportunity to contribute to concrete efforts that strengthen and restore habitats for fish, freshwater pearl mussels, otters, and other aquatic species in the county's lakes and waterways.

If you share our commitment to nature conservation and want to make a practical difference, we welcome your application.

We are looking for approximately 15-20 individuals for field operations related to our long-term work with water and fisheries management. The work will largely take place within ongoing restoration projects, such as the EU projects Rivers of LIFE and Ecostreams for LIFE, but also within other projects and assignments related to water conservation and fishing. The positions may vary in duration from approximately 3 to 6 months. Most of the work will be conducted in the field between June and September. Some positions may start earlier and finish later, and may include more administrative tasks.

A significant portion of the tasks will be performed at locations other than the employment location Östersund, which means that overnight stays at other locations may be required, sometimes for entire workweeks.

Weeks 30 and 31 are mandatory vacation weeks as all field operations will be on hold during that time.

Tasks

Your main tasks will involve participating in field operations. The role also includes preparations and administrative tasks related to planning and follow-up of field efforts. Other operational tasks may also arise. The position may include one or more of the following tasks:

  • Planning and leading restoration work in waterways together with excavator operators and support from a coordinator.
  • Manual restoration of waterways and creation of spawning areas for fish.
  • Manual removal of smaller dams.
  • Inventory and restoration of drained wetlands.
  • Action inventory of waterways that have been cleared for floating logs using ESRIs applications Survey and Field Maps.
  • Electric, net, and crayfish fishing in lakes and waterways.
  • Inventory of migration barriers at older dams and road crossings.

The County Administrative Board is responsible for providing the necessary equipment, training, and introduction to the tasks. Please indicate in your application the earliest date you can start and how long you can work.

Qualifications

The role requires good collaboration skills, clear communication, and the ability to work independently with the capacity to make decisions when necessary. You should also be flexible in your working style and able to handle tasks that require focus over extended periods. We highly value these qualities. You must be proficient in Swedish, both spoken and written. We strive for an equal working environment.

To perform the work, you need to have good field experience and be physically fit to spend entire days in forests and fields, wade in flowing water, work from a boat, and carry field equipment to and from waterways. The work involves travel within the county, which requires a valid B driver's license.

Extra merits for the position include having a scientific education with relevant orientation and/or experience in fieldwork within the areas included in the tasks, particularly tasks 1, 2, 4, and 6.

Other meritorious qualifications include a strong interest in water conservation, fisheries management, and nature conservation. It is also advantageous if you have a chainsaw license A+B, particularly related to task 4.

We will process applications and start interviews on an ongoing basis.

We offer you a meaningful job with varied tasks. You will make a difference for our county and community. The County Administrative Board is a broad authority, which means you will constantly have the opportunity to develop and learn new things. This applies across several policy areas.

As an employer, we focus on good employment conditions, active work environment efforts, and health-promoting wellness activities. We value collaboration with our trade union partners and can offer remote work.

In the case of a permanent position at the County Administrative Board, you will be assigned to the authority in times of crisis. Depending on the position, it may involve service in the crisis staff and security classification. We usually start with a probationary employment period for permanent positions.
