Senior Staff Scientist in Bioinformatics
The Department of Physiological Botany is now seeking a Senior Staff Scientist.
The position is full-time starting in February 2026, or by agreement.
SciLifeLab is a national research center for molecular biosciences. At SciLifeLab, the activities revolve around life science – a globally important research field that makes a difference in areas such as health, environment, and climate. We have taken a new approach. We weave together several of the components needed to meet the societal challenges we face: high-tech analytical methods, management of large amounts of research data, and interdisciplinary collaborations. And since we do this with a national mandate from the government while our center is driven by four host universities, there is no profit interest. Just the ambition to enable research that would otherwise not be feasible in Sweden.
The Department of Physiological Botany conducts advanced education and research in molecular plant biology and bioinformatics. Here you will also find Umeå University's bioinformatics support group, supported by SciLife, as well as the Swedish Metabolomics Centre, which supports Swedish and European researchers in bioinformatics and metabolomics. We are part of the Umeå Plant Science Centre (www.upsc.se) with approximately 250 employees and fellows, making it one of Europe's strongest research centers in experimental plant biology with over 30 active research groups in areas ranging from forest ecology to bioinformatics.
Description
SciLifeLab works nationally to provide support and training in technology and data-driven life sciences, where an important component is lifelong learning and skill enhancement for Swedish researchers. We are now looking for a Senior Staff Scientist who can lead the infrastructure group within the SciLifeLab Training Hub, with the goal of building digital infrastructure and systems to support education and learning.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Training Hub's work together with the unit's head (Head of Training) focusing on supporting SciLifeLab's platforms in their educational efforts and promoting lifelong learning in life sciences
- Responsible for the staff within the development team, including recruitment, management, and follow-up
- Responsible (Technical lead) for all infrastructure projects
- Budget responsible for the unit
- Together with the head, responsible for strategy and long-term development of the Training Hub
- Write national and international applications together with European partners
- Drive European collaboration projects in the further education of researchers in life sciences
- Responsible for daily operations as well as follow-up and reporting regarding personnel and finances
- Collaborate with the Data Driven Life Science, DDLS, program and DDLS graduate school
- Develop new courses and teach in pedagogy and FAIR.
- Coordinate the Swedish node's work within the European collaboration body for infrastructures in life sciences, ELIXIR related to the education of researchers
Qualifications
For employment as a Senior Staff Scientist, a PhD in bioinformatics, medicine, or another relevant research area is required. Furthermore, solid knowledge and extensive experience in bioinformatics, as well as very good knowledge of underlying theories and principles, and specific competence related to the development and application of advanced methods in bioinformatics are required. Additionally, experience in support activities in bioinformatics directed towards active researchers in life sciences is required. Good communication skills in Swedish and English are required for the position.
For the position, you should also have;
- Experience in establishing, developing, and operating research infrastructure.
- Experience in qualified management/coordinating work with research infrastructure, such as management, budget work, coordination, collaboration, reporting, and grant writing/funding work.
Furthermore, it is advantageous to have;
- Scientific production and contributions to the development of the scientific field, for example through publications in reputable scientific journals.
- Experience in developing and delivering training, such as lectures, workshops, and demonstrations at various educational levels for different groups of recipients.
- Experience in outreach activities, such as participation in and presentation at conferences, preparation of scientific reports and presentations, participation in national or international networks, or popular science activities.
Application
You apply through our e-recruitment system Varbi by December 30, 2025. Your application should include:
- A CV with your academic education and previous employment.
- A list of publications.
- Your PhD certificate.
- Any other relevant documentation that you wish to present to support your application.
