Staff Scientist

Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is one of Europe’s strongest research environments for plant fundamental research, including studies on plant ecology, genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, and physiology (see www.upsc.se (http://www.upsc.se)). We are now seeking a staff scientist for the Department of Physiological Botany, which is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre. The position is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months, starting on February 18, 2026, or by agreement.

Project Description

This forest genomics project focuses on improving forest resources through modern genetic methods. To characterize conifers in the Swedish forest, we use whole-genome re-sequencing methodology and study the evolution of the genome, construct genetic maps, develop a SNP array, and employ “Genome-wide association study” methodology.

We aim to understand the genetic underlying reasons for the variation we observe in economically important traits of conifers to breed new, better varieties in the future. We are now looking for a staff scientist to participate in this research.

Responsibilities

Participate in a large forest genomics project, which includes (1) extracting DNA from conifers and performing SNP genotyping; (2) conducting population and comparative genomic analyses to study the adaptive evolution of conifers; (3) conducting a Genome-wide association study and through selection for quantitative traits such as phenology, flowering, wood properties, growth, and other adaptive traits.

Qualifications

A PhD in plant physiology, population genetics, or equivalent is required.

Extensive experience in conifer re-sequencing, SNP calling, development of SNP arrays, and constructing genetic maps is required.

For the position, you must be motivated, goal-oriented, and have a good ability to think critically. You should also have a strong ability to collaborate with other members of a research team. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is essential.
