VTI is looking for a PhD student

VTI, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, is now seeking an engaged PhD student for one of our offices.

About the role

You will focus on studying both the conditions for and the possibilities of, as well as the technical development of remote control of trains in Sweden. The work is expected to lead to increased knowledge building not only on an academic level but also in practical work to enhance knowledge and contribute to the overall development of train operations. You will also work closely with ongoing railway and train projects conducted by the unit, as well as in close collaboration with stakeholders and industry organizations represented in the field.

As a PhD student, you will be enrolled as a doctoral student at IDA, the Department of Computer Science at Linköping University. Your doctoral education includes several components, such as completing doctoral courses and conducting applied research of high quality under supervision. The work involves planning research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and developing new methods. You will also write articles and present research and research results.

The position can be located at any of our offices in Linköping, Stockholm, Gothenburg, or Lund.

About you

You have a Master’s degree in a relevant field of engineering. Alternatively, another technical or cognitive science background at the Master’s level or equivalent, with an interest in transportation, railways, and the interaction between humans and technology.

The tasks involve contacts with clients, partners, and other researchers. Therefore, good collaboration skills and the ability to express yourself both in writing and verbally in Swedish and English are required. The tasks require a grounding in theory and methodology, and you should be able to independently compile, analyze, and present material. We place great emphasis on your ability to take initiative and work independently.

Swedish citizenship is a requirement for this position.

About VTI

VTI is a government agency that conducts applied research and qualified investigations in the transport sector. We have around 250 employees and are located in Linköping, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, and Skellefteå. VTI has an annual turnover of approximately 300 million SEK.

The unit Drivers and Vehicles works across modes of transport, and an important area is railways, where significant work is currently underway in both capacity and traffic optimization on the tracks as well as in train operations. To ensure that all these different efforts provide the best possible conditions for utilizing the railway, we now want to enhance competence and secure knowledge building in the research area of remote control of trains in Sweden.

Appointment period

The appointment is valid for a maximum of one year at a time. Those who have received an appointment and have successfully engaged in doctoral education have priority for continued appointment. The employment is time-limited.

As a PhD student, you will be employed at VTI while being admitted to the doctoral education at IDA, the Department of Computer Science at Linköping University.
