Prison and Probation Services are expanding, building new facilities, renovating existing ones, and seeking more staff. Our main goal is to reduce recidivism - to break the cycle of crime. If we succeed, society will become safer for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, remand centres, and client transports.

Viskan Prison is a closed prison that will start receiving inmates in March 2025. 125 employees work in the facility. The prison has room for 120 inmates and 24 contingency places. The largest professional group is correctional officers, but the staff also includes healthcare professionals, administrative personnel, educators, production managers, and more. Inmates will be engaged in education, various treatment programs, or industrial production. The best way to reach Viskan is by car, and you can park in our staff parking lot.

Småbo Prison is an open prison in Torpshammar, and it is estimated that the prison will start receiving inmates in the spring of 2026. The prison has room for 220 inmates, and approximately 120 employees will work in the facility. The largest professional group is correctional officers, but the staff also includes healthcare professionals, administrative personnel, educators, production managers, and more. Inmates will be engaged in education, various treatment programs, or production. The best way to reach Småbo is by car, and you can park in our staff parking lot.

Job Responsibilities

Working as a correctional officer means that you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. As a correctional officer in the Viskan area, you will be part of a team where you have daily contact with the client. The tasks at the prison are varied and include care, surveillance, search and security, conversation/motivational work, and planning for the client's execution.

You will start your employment at the workplace where you will receive an introduction for three weeks. After a period of service, you will be offered a place in the basic training of the Prison and Probation Services, which is mandatory and lasts for 8 weeks. You will receive a salary throughout the training period. Continuous assessments for your possibility of permanent employment will be conducted during the probationary period.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important to us. As a correctional officer, you need to be confident, stable, and have good self-awareness. Since you, together with your colleagues, run the operation, you need to have good teamwork skills and the ability to communicate clearly. In your professional practice, good judgment and integrity are required. You have a physical status that enables you to act physically when the situation requires it.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not equivalent to employment.
• A complete high school education or other education combined with work experience that the Prison and Probation Services deems relevant.
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
• Good computer skills

It is advantageous if you have:

• Work experience in corrections, security work, social care, psychiatry, educational work, or healthcare work.
• Education in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, or conflict management.
• Other language skills besides Swedish and English.
• A driver's license (B)

Other

We place high demands on our employees' security and confidentiality awareness. Security checks will precede decisions on employment. Some positions are classified as security positions, and a security check with a record check will be conducted before a decision on employment is made. For positions with higher security classification, you need to be a Swedish citizen, but having a foreign background is welcome. The position may involve wartime placement at the Prison and Probation Services.
