Research Engineer in Dynamic Systems

FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe’s leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations for total defense, as well as supporting disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our operations are carried out on behalf of primarily the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have about 1400 employees, of which over 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and engineering to social and political sciences.

Would you like to work on exciting projects with technology for defense and security? Can you analyze complex systems and understand the essentials? Do you understand the connection between today’s technological developments and future applications? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!

About the Position

As a research engineer, you will analyze, assess, and develop technology, methods, and tools for dynamic systems. Your focus will be on the control of advanced flying vehicles. The tasks will range from monitoring and analyzing existing systems to developing models and tools for dynamic simulations of future vehicles. You will work in collaboration with other defense authorities and provide support and basis for assessments and analyses of various capability concepts. Reporting research results is also an important part of the job.

You will become part of a research group where scientific methodology permeates the work, which takes place both individually and in groups. In addition to working with your own group, we collaborate closely with other groups within FOI, other defense authorities, and in international collaborations.

About the Unit

You will be part of the Guided Weapons unit, which belongs to the Defense Technology department in Kista. Please read more about what we do: FOI Defense Technology (https://foi.se/om-foi/organisation/forsvarsteknik.html).

In the unit, we research areas such as control, navigation, and vehicle dynamics. We work with studies, analyses, and evaluations, primarily of weapon systems. Applications range from modeling and simulation of hypersonic weapons to developing alternative methods for navigation. The unit's work aims both to analyze the performance and capabilities of current systems and to develop and evaluate new concepts for future defense.

Do You Have the Competence Profile We Need?

We are looking for someone with:

  • a completed master's degree in engineering (or soon to be completed) or equivalent in areas such as signal processing, control engineering, optimization, systems theory, robotics, or applied mathematics
  • the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both spoken and written form, in Swedish as well as in English.

We seek a person who enjoys working both independently and in a group, and who has good collaboration skills. We appreciate initiative and goal-oriented results. Furthermore, you have a good analytical ability and find it easy to translate theory into practice and to contextualize problems. You have a developed ability to quickly acquire new information and to quickly familiarize yourself with new areas. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.

It is advantageous if you have:

  • practical and theoretical experience of navigation and control systems, trajectory planning, simulation of flying vehicles, and software development in object-oriented programming languages
  • experience with weapon-related issues from, for example, the Armed Forces, FMV, or the defense industry
  • experience in project management of technical projects.

What Do We Offer You?

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense.
