Research Assistant in Physiology and Environmental Toxicology

The Department of Organism Biology at Uppsala University explores evolution, systematics, development, and function at the organism level.

In the program for physiology and environmental toxicology, we use molecular tools and experimental models to investigate how cellular and molecular mechanisms affect the physiology of the whole organism and toxic responses in animals, human cells, microbes, and photosynthetic organisms. We are now seeking a research assistant for the Physiology and Environmental Toxicology program.

Job Responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated and independent person who wants to work on exploring the cognitive effects of nutrient-poor environments in early life, focusing on neuro-epigenetic reversibility. The project uses pigs to investigate how early environmental conditions affect brain function and the potential for recovery through epigenetic mechanisms. Your main tasks will include performing molecular biological techniques, including DNA extraction and quality control, PCR, qPCR, and library preparation for sequencing. Other tasks may also occur.

Qualifications

You should have a master's degree in cell and molecular biology. Practical experience with molecular biological techniques, including PCR, qPCR, and DNA/RNA extraction is also required. You should have the ability to document experiments. Attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently are also essential. Knowledge of data analysis and the ability to apply analytical techniques to collected data using libraries such as Pandas and NumPy is required.

Personal suitability will be given significant weight. To fit into the role, you need to be able to work independently, organized, and structured. You are responsible, meticulous, and comfortable performing both practical and written tasks. You must demonstrate good communication skills in English, both spoken and written.

Desirable/meritorious

Desirable experience working on projects within academia. Experience with animal models or handling animal tissues is also meritorious.
