About the Job

We are looking for a seasonal assistant for the stream ecology laboratory at SLU Umeå. The work will involve field studies of forest vegetation, stream communities (e.g., macroinvertebrates, diatoms) and habitats between the shore and the stream. Laboratory work may occur (sample sorting, water chemical analyses, etc.) and data entry will be required at the end of the field season.

The tasks will vary, and the assistant will help with several projects at multiple locations. The work will be conducted in all weather conditions, in aquatic environments and shoreline areas, and in rugged terrain. It will sometimes require hiking, heavy lifting, and manual labor. The job will require extensive driving (including forest roads).

The work will primarily take place in the field in Västerbotten County, but several trips to Uppsala, Dalarna, and Halland County will be included. Accommodation in more remote areas for a few nights will be provided in cabins.

Your Background

We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible, and motivated person who can assist with field studies in streams and shoreline zones and who can adapt to schedule changes and long days in the field. We seek someone who works well in a research team but can also perform tasks independently. The applicant can also collect data for their own thesis related to the sampling surveys.

Experience Requirements:

• Experience in fieldwork
• Driver's license and experience driving a car
• Ability to spend time away from Umeå during various periods

Meritorious:

• Interest or experience in forestry, streams, riparian zones, and ecological sampling methods
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a group.
