Today's Electricity Prices: A Mix of Free Electricity and High Peaks

On August 30, 2024, Sweden offers a fascinating variety of electricity prices. During the night and early morning, consumers can enjoy free electricity and even get paid to use it. But as the day dawns and we approach the afternoon, prices rise significantly.

Free Electricity During the Night

For those who stay up late or are early risers, it's a golden opportunity to save money. Between 00:00 and 05:00, electricity prices are negative, which means you actually get paid to use electricity. Here are some examples:

  • 00:00-00:59: -0.91 öre/kWh
  • 01:00-01:59: -1.07 öre/kWh

A shower using 4 kWh of energy would actually give you back 6 öre, while a bath using 6 kWh of energy would give you 9 öre. A dishwasher using 1 kWh of energy would give you 2 öre back, and charging an electric car with 60 kWh of energy would give you 96 öre back.

Interesting Facts About Electricity Prices

Did you know that if we had the lowest electricity price all year, it would have cost -289 SEK to heat a normal-sized house of 160 sqm? This is based on an annual consumption of 18,000 kWh of energy. Conversely, if we had the highest electricity price all year, it would have cost 12,198 SEK to heat the same house.

To optimize your electricity costs, consider planning energy-intensive activities like charging your electric car, doing the dishes, taking a bath, and showering during the cheapest hours of the day. This can lead to significant savings, especially during periods of negative electricity prices.
