About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service
The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce reoffending – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation services, remand prisons, and client transport.
Job Description
As a prison officer, you are part of a team where you have daily contact with the client.
Remand Prison: Working at a remand prison involves a focus on care and security and is a job with clear routines. Some people are held in pre-trial detention for long periods and only meet their lawyer and the staff at the remand prison. This places special demands on you as a prison officer.
Working as a prison officer means you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development.
You begin your employment at the workplace where you receive an introduction over three weeks. After a period of service, you are offered a place at the Prison and Probation Service's basic training, which is mandatory and lasts for 8 weeks. You receive a salary during the entire training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments are conducted regarding your possibility of permanent employment.
Qualifications
Your personal qualities are important. As a prison officer, you need to be confident, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need good teamwork skills and clear communication. You must be able to act physically when required.
For us, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensuring that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
We are looking for you who have:
- Complete upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
- Work experience, also in the form of seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not to be equated with employment
- Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
- Good computer skills
- Category B driver's license; for applications to the National Transport Unit, a Category B driver's license and driving experience are required
The following are also meritorious:
- Work experience from the prison and probation service, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and social care work
- Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
- Relevant language skills
