About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation, remand prisons, and client transport.

The operational area of Falun/Östersund/Gävle includes the remand prisons in Falun, Östersund, and Gävle. This position is a temporary hourly replacement in Gävle. As a temporary hourly employee, you will work within our operations in Gävle. Placement in Falun and Östersund is not included in this assignment. The remand prison in Gävle is located in central Gävle.

Job Description

As a correctional officer, you make a real difference. You help create a safer and more secure society by working in teams and together with other professional groups to help people break the vicious cycle and motivate them not to reoffend. This is based on your sharing the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans can develop and change.

At the remand prison in Gävle, the focus is on dynamic security in daily contact with clients. Routines are a natural part of your work as you, together with your colleagues, are responsible for searching, supervising, and escorting clients to various activities during their detention.

The job is varied and client-oriented. You follow up, observe, guide, and with the help of various measures, try to help the client break isolation and improve their well-being. The work as a correctional officer also includes administrative tasks to plan, maintain, and document clients' time in the remand prison.

At the remand prison in Gävle, special demands are placed on your security judgment. You are expected to be able to handle challenging situations and make the right decisions even under pressure and demanding conditions.

This advertisement is for you who want to work as a correctional officer on a temporary hourly basis. This is a needs-based employment, which means you will be booked for shifts when the remand prison in Gävle has a need. This may involve single days, but we would appreciate it if you could also work full-time during certain periods, such as Christmas, New Year, school holidays, and summer.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, good judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need to have good cooperation skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.

It is important to us that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and have an understanding of how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute with your attitude to ensure that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

We are looking for you who have:

• A complete upper secondary education or alternatively other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
• Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not to be equated with employment
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
• Good computer skills
• Category B driver's license

The following are also meritorious:

• Experience in security work is seen as particularly meritorious.
• Experience in service, psychiatry, or care and treatment operations is meritorious. Care and treatment operations refer to, for example, hospitals, treatment homes, LSS (Swedish Act for Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments), and similar operations.
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
• Relevant language skills
