Gotland Rescue Service consists of approximately 200 employees in total, including firefighters, officers, rescue service personnel on standby (RIB), RIB without standby (formerly fire watch), preventive operations, and administration.
Gotland Rescue Service comprises ten fire stations. Of the ten scattered around the island, one is a full-time unit located in Visby, six have rescue personnel on standby, and three have personnel without standby.
As rescue service personnel on standby (RIB) or RIB without standby, you contribute to the safety of your home region.

Your responsibilities
Working as an RIB at a station with standby duty means you are on standby for at least seven days within a four-week period. The standby is distributed across all days, where you, together with colleagues, respond to alarms such as traffic accidents, fires, medical emergencies, etc. During standby, you must be able to report to the fire station within 5–7 minutes. To be eligible for various rescue assignments, you are required to participate in at least 50 training hours per year if you belong to an RIB station with standby.
Working as an RIB at a station without standby (formerly known as rescue watch) means you do not have the standby described above, but you must report to the station upon alarm if possible, with a response time of 5–7 minutes. To be eligible for various rescue assignments, you are required to participate in at least 30 training hours per year.
Responsibilities as an RIB, regardless of having standby or not, also include preventive work such as public information.
To fulfill the role, you must be able to participate in exercises, training, and other work-related activities that may take place in the evenings and on weekdays during the day.
We are recruiting personnel for the following stations around the island:
RIB stations with standby:
- Northern District: Fårösund, Slite, Kräklingbo
- Southern District: Klintehamn, Hemse, Burgsvik
RIB stations without standby:
- Northern District: Dalhem
- Southern District: Garda
Who are you?
To be eligible for the position, the following requirements must be met:
- Good physical health.
- Swimming proficiency and no history of vertigo or claustrophobia.
- A Category B driver's license is required. A Category C license is an advantage.
- You must be able to report to the fire station and board an emergency vehicle from your home or workplace within 5–7 minutes.
- Be prepared to respond to alarms 24/7 on the days you are on standby.
As a person, you are confident, empathetic, stress-resistant, and a good team player. You have a positive attitude and value openness, respect, and responsibility. You are flexible and willing to work.
The recruitment process:
Step 1: Selection, interview, and reference checks
Step 2: Certificates
During the interview, you will receive several documents/certificates that you need to complete to proceed with the recruitment. Once completed, these are submitted to the recruiter or station manager. You will receive more information during the interview.
The attached certificates include:
- Swimming proficiency, similar to the Gold Badge.
- Certificate of approval from your main employer.
- Treadmill test (walk for 8 minutes at an 8-degree incline and speed 4.5, wearing turnout gear and an air pack on your back).
Step 3: Test day – Saturday, August 29th
You will try out various work-related physical tasks, as well as claustrophobia and height tests, and a communication test.
Step 4: Final selection
Those offered employment must complete the introductory training with a passing grade to proceed with the employment.
Training Plan 2026:
The basic training is mandatory. The training will begin with two days of self-study before the start of the course, estimated at approximately 16 hours of self-study time. The training starts on November 20–2026 at the fire station in Visby.
If the employment is at a station with enhanced capabilities for handling traffic accidents (Fårösund, Slite, Klintehamn, Hemse), an additional two training days will be added: November 23–24, 2026.
If the employment is at a station with smoke diving capabilities (Fårösund, Slite, Klintehamn, Hemse), you will undergo a health check at the occupational health service before the start of the training to allow for direct advanced training as a smoke diver after the basic course.
The advanced training to become a smoke diver takes place after the introductory training for an additional two weeks, November 30 – December 11, 2026.
