Join and drive one of Europe's most advanced research facilities.
We are now looking for several employees for our Remote Handling team within Target Operations & Maintenance. The team is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and further development of the equipment used to transport and handle radioactive components and waste. At ESS, there is the "Active Cells Facility", which are specially developed areas for the safe remote handling of radioactive waste. To transport the material, specialized transport equipment called "Cask Assemblies" (CA) is used. Here you will work with advanced remote-controlled systems, heavy lifting, VR-supported operations, and complex electromechanical systems in a unique technical environment.
This is a role for you who enjoys practical technical work, problem-solving, and advanced equipment – and who wants to work together with international colleagues in a high-tech environment. Our remote handling systems are developed for environments where humans cannot work directly on site. As a technician in remote operation and robotics, you will prepare, operate, maintain, and develop the systems used to handle radioactive components and waste – both manually and via remote control.
You will work with, among other things:
- Telemanipulators and haptic robotic systems.
- Remote-controlled overhead cranes and lifting systems.
- Remote-controlled cutting and machining equipment.
- Specialized transport containers for radioactive waste.
- Camera- and VR-supported operations.
- Complex electromechanical systems.
- Special tools and inspection equipment for remote handling.
You will become an important part of commissioning, further developing, and maintaining the systems to ensure high availability and safe operation in one of Europe's most advanced technical environments.
Your main tasks:
- Provide technical support in the development of work instructions and risk assessments.
- Participate in commissioning, testing, maintenance, and modifications.
- Operate and maintain specialized remote handling equipment.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical systems.
- Collaborate with engineers to improve equipment reliability and maintainability.
- Create and update technical documentation and maintenance instructions.
- Support workshop and manufacturing activities as needed.
- Contribute to safe working methods in radiation-classified environments.
- Participate in the planning of major lifting and maintenance interventions.
This is not a standard operator role. You will work with technology and systems developed for places where direct human access is not possible. The role combines precision mechanics, robotics, remote control, maintenance strategy, heavy mechanical systems, and new technology such as VR-supported handling.
ESS offers extensive specialist training and the opportunity to collaborate with internationally leading experts in remote handling and advanced technology.
The position is a permanent full-time employment located at ESS (European Spallation Source).
Who are you?
We are looking for you who are practical, technically curious, and thrive with problem-solving and teamwork in complex technical environments.
You need:
- At least 3 years of experience from a technical role in industry, operations, or maintenance.
- Experience working in regulated or safety-controlled operations.
- Good mechanical or electromechanical understanding.
- Experience working from drawings and technical documentation.
- Experience in assembly, testing, commissioning, or maintenance of industrial equipment.
- Experience with technical documentation and maintenance instructions.
- Experience in the safe use of workshop machinery and tools.
- Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
It is an advantage if you have experience with:
- Remote handling systems or robotics.
- Nuclear technology operations or other safety-critical areas.
- Heavy lifting or overhead crane systems.
- PLC troubleshooting or control systems.
- Machining, CNC, welding, or workshop work.
- VR-based tools or digital technical environments.
