Department of Culture and Leisure

The Department of Culture and Leisure plays a central role in creating a vibrant, inclusive, and inspiring municipality for all residents. Here, we work with everything from cultural schools, libraries, and museums to events, art halls, and support for associations. We are also responsible for cultural-historical environments as well as the municipality's swimming, sports, and outdoor activities.

The Culture Unit works with:

  • Production and coordination of open program activities and stage technology
  • Communication prior to concerts, dance and theater performances, fairs, festivals, dialogues, and exhibitions
  • Sandviken Art Hall, public art, and art pedagogy
  • Production and coordination of the "Cultural Promise" (all students, aged 4-16, in the municipality are offered professional cultural experiences and their own cultural practice during school and preschool time each academic year)
  • Production and coordination of Välmåga 2026-2028 – a strategic coordination of cultural and leisure offerings for seniors and persons with disabilities
  • Rental of premises at the Culture Centre and a dozen additional properties that serve as arenas for the voluntary non-profit sector in the municipality
  • Support for adult education and associations, museums and cultural-historical environments, grants, and prizes

The Culture Unit works closely with other public actors, the independent cultural life, and the voluntary non-profit sector both within and outside Sandviken. The unit has a coordinating role within the Culture Centre, where premises, offerings, and communication are coordinated with the Public Library, the Trampolin Literature House, the Cultural School, and the People's House.

The unit is regularly supplemented by art and culture guides, stage and exhibition technicians, and other contractors.

Job Responsibilities

Sandviken Art Hall consists of approximately 250 square meters of exhibition space and is located in the middle of the Culture Centre building. The exhibition activity is an integrated part of the Culture Centre's program activities and currently shows solo and group exhibitions with contemporary art, exhibitions for children and young people in broad collaborations based on picture books, the annual Sandviken Salon, and exhibitions within the annual initiative on Sandviken Form & Design where Ung Svensk Form returns in 2027. Based on the exhibitions, program activities are arranged; vernissages, public dialogues, tours, workshops, performances, and lectures.

The Cultural Coordinator with a focus on art is tasked with coordinating both the exhibition activities at Sandviken Art Hall and the municipality's work with public art. The assignment includes:

  • Working to develop Sandviken Art Hall's program activities with both breadth and depth
  • Supervising and supporting visiting curators, artists, and exhibition technicians, and ensuring good logistics and realistic schedules within budget
  • Conducting environmental scanning and developing content proposals, as well as convening a program group for the art activities
  • Planning and executing exhibitions and art projects from start to finish
  • Coordinating exhibitions and projects together with colleagues within the unit, other operations within the Culture Centre, and external partners
  • Documenting, writing project proposals, and applying for external funding
  • Coordinating materials for the communication of the art hall's offerings
  • Working with the lending of works from the municipality's art collection and re-hanging collections of art in workplaces and semi-public environments
  • Working for good hospitality and a broadened audience in close collaboration with art guides and the cultural coordinator with a focus on audience development

Qualifications

We are looking for you who have:

  • A Master's degree in Fine Arts from an art university, or alternatively an academic degree in art history, exhibition production, museology, or something considered equivalent by the employer
  • At least five years of work experience in exhibition production in various types of exhibition rooms and operations
  • Work experience from various types of organizations
  • An interest in working with a strong sense for artistic quality and integrity, as well as audience relevance, with content characterized by both breadth and depth
  • A broad national network within contemporary art
  • Very good planning skills and competence in logistics, administration, and digital tools
  • Experience working in various digital systems

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Work experience within public art
  • Experience in cultural production and driving cultural projects within different art forms
  • Experience with politically governed organizations

Work Samples

In connection with a possible interview, you will need to be able to present work samples from previous exhibition planning. The work samples must not have been created with the help of AI.

Employment Type

Fixed-term employment. Duration: 6 months or longer, start date: 2026-10-01 or according to agreement, end date: 2029-08-31.
