Doctoral Programme Subject

Gene regulatory networks in lung development and regeneration

The doctoral thesis will be carried out within the framework of a VR-funded project focusing on gene regulatory networks in lung epithelial cells during development and regeneration. The research involves multi-omics analysis of mouse and human epithelial cells with single-cell resolution. snRNA-seq data and snATAC-seq data from several developmental stages will initially be used to predict gene regulatory networks consisting of transcription factors, enhancer elements, and downstream genes. These data will be integrated with multiplex in situ RNA expression data to define cellular niches and cell–cell communication patterns in the developing lung. The descriptive data will be followed by mechanistic experiments in in vitro organoids as well as in mice in vivo.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the doctoral programme, the applicant must have basic and special eligibility. Eligibility must be met by the final application deadline.

You have basic eligibility if you have completed a degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (HEC), of which at least 60 HEC at advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.

Special eligibility is described in the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the subject.

Selection

Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral-level education. Criteria used to assess this ability are:

  • Documented knowledge and research experience in cell and molecular biology.
  • Formal education in bioinformatics or statistics, as well as the ability to perform quantitative data analysis in Python and/or R.
  • Good written and oral proficiency in English.
  • Strong drive and initiative to pursue a scientific career.
