The Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) conducts experimental basic research in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. The research environment is characterized by modern and advanced methodology and has a strong international profile. MBW is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University, with over 30 research groups and approximately 180 employees, including 65 doctoral students. More information about us can be found at: Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (https://www.mbw.su.se).
Project Description: AI for Drug Design
The doctoral candidate's dissertation work will be carried out within the framework of Dr. Patrick Bryant's research group. The project deals with molecular mechanisms for the creation of new AI tools for the evaluation and design of molecular interactions. The project will specifically relate to the 3D structure of proteins and other molecules such as DNA, RNA, and drugs, and the prediction of interactions between them.
A strong background in programming is a requirement. Please include your GitHub link in your application. There will be a strong focus on developing and using machine learning tools and new molecular representations. The developed models will be rigorously tested through laboratory analyses with the aim of creating new classes of drugs. Laboratory skills are therefore highly meritorious.
The spoken language in the lab and at the department is English, and the department offers a multicultural experience with researchers from all over the world. The work will be performed at the Science for Life Laboratory in collaboration with MBW and Stockholm University.
Qualification Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral studies, the applicant must have basic and specific eligibility. Eligibility must be met by the last day of application.
You have basic eligibility if you have completed an advanced level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (HEC), of which at least 60 HEC at advanced level, or otherwise, within or outside the country, acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
To meet the specific eligibility requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of molecular biosciences stipulates that applicants must have completed a higher education degree at advanced level or at least 240 HEC higher education (240 HEC at Swedish universities), including at least 120 HEC at bachelor's level in molecular biology, biology, chemistry, or a similar subject. Bachelors should have taken advanced level courses in molecular biosciences or corresponding subjects (at least 60 HEC), of which at least 30 HEC represent an independent research project. Eligible are also applicants who have other documented merits, acquired in Sweden or elsewhere, which are assessed to provide equivalent knowledge.
Selection
Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from education at the doctoral level. Criteria used to assess this ability are:
- documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area
- analytical and creative thinking
- initiative
- independence
- collaborative skills
- ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English
