The Department of Molecular Biosciences, Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) conducts experimental basic research in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. The research environment is characterized by modern and advanced methodology and has a strong international profile. MBW is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University, with over 30 research groups and approximately 180 employees, including 65 doctoral students.

Project Description

The doctoral thesis work will be conducted within the doctoral education program in Molecular Biosciences and is linked to the research group led by Professor Kristina Jonas. The group focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms that regulate bacterial growth and cell division under changing environmental conditions. The project aims to clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial multicellular behaviors, such as biofilm formation and interbacterial communication. The work combines methods in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and bacterial cell biology. The project also includes elements of environmental microbiology, such as the isolation and characterization of new bacterial strains. Qualifications

To be admitted to doctoral education, applicants must meet both basic and specific entry requirements. These requirements must be fulfilled by the last day of application.

Basic entry requirements are met if you have completed an advanced level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (HEC), including at least 60 HEC at advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

Selection

Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include:

• Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area.
• Experience in experimental microbiological research and/or analysis of large-scale genomic data.
• Analytical and creative thinking.
• Initiative.
• Independence.
• Collaborative skills.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.

About the Position

We offer a fixed-term position as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education over four years. As a doctoral student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with teaching, research, and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20%).

A new employment as a doctoral student is valid for a maximum of one year. The employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
