The unit's mandate is to achieve environmental quality objectives and contribute to sustainable development in the county. The unit has tasks including protecting nature, managing the county's nature reserves and Natura 2000 areas, safeguarding water quality, managing predators, and taking measures for threatened species. The unit also supports other units at the County Administrative Board with nature conservation expertise.

The role is highly proactive, and much of the work is carried out through dialogue and collaboration with farmers, landowners, and other actors in the county. The work involves information campaigns, guidance, and support to enable more measures, as well as identifying suitable areas for new wetlands. The position also involves external collaboration with other County Administrative Boards and authorities, which may involve travel.
