Job Advertisement: Researcher in Protist Genomics

Job Responsibilities

The work focuses on the development of genomic tools to study individual protist cells.

Some of the planned methods include anaerobic cultivation, environmental sampling, 18S metabarcoding, metagenomics, bioinformatics, and phylogenetic analysis.

Requirements for Employment

• PhD in biology or genomics.
• Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
• Documented ability in nucleic acid extraction, genome or transcriptome sequencing of non-model protists.
• Documented ability in anaerobic cultivation of protists.
• Documented experience in bioinformatics with gene and protein database work, metagenomics, genome sequencing, and assembly in eukaryotes.
• A strong record of publishing peer-reviewed academic papers.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to organize resources, plan and develop work activities, and meet deadlines effectively and consistently.
• Ability to communicate scientific results and knowledge to non-specialists and students.

Desirable Qualifications

• Documented ability and experience working with genetic, cell biological, and biochemical methods that will be used in the project.
• Documented ability and experience in wet and silico work with non-model organisms or environmental microorganisms.
• Documented ability and experience in supervising students, both individually and in groups.

Consideration will also be given to good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant's experience and competence are assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development. Relevant personal letters and application forms will also be taken into account.

Conditions

The position is temporary for a maximum of 1 year and is full-time (100%). Desired start date is February 1, 2025, or as soon as possible by agreement.

At the Faculty of Science, research and education are conducted in biology, astronomy, physics, geoscience, chemistry, mathematics, and environmental science. The activities are conducted at eight departments located within the northern university area. The faculty has about 1,500 students, 330 doctoral students, and 700 employees.
