Job Description

The position of assistant professor is a qualifying appointment where the holder will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and educator.

The Faculty of Science offers a career program for assistant professors.

To support the establishment of a research group, resources equivalent to a doctoral student position will be attached to the employment.

The duties primarily include research and teaching within undergraduate and graduate education. The position includes teaching that currently constitutes 10-30% of a full-time position, calculated over the entire employment period. The content of the duties, as well as the distribution and scope between research and teaching, may change over time.

The employee is expected to build active research within the subject area and related fields, which also involves actively seeking external funding for the department's activities and developing collaboration with both units within the university and with other governmental agencies and organizations working on similar issues.

Teaching includes basic and advanced courses in the subject area, courses in graduate education, and supervision of theses and doctoral students.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as assistant professor is one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the candidate should have obtained their doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application deadline for the position as assistant professor has expired. Those who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons.

The assistant professor must have a doctoral degree with a focus on organic chemistry and must have successfully completed a postdoctoral stay in a research environment other than the institution where the candidate obtained their doctorate.

For teachers at Lund University, the general eligibility requirement is to be suitable for and have the ability otherwise needed to perform the duties well.

Assessment Criteria

Good ability to develop and conduct high-quality research as well as pedagogical ability. The main assessment criteria are scientific and pedagogical skills, with greater emphasis placed on scientific competence.

In the assessment, it is a requirement that the applicant:

• demonstrates scientific competence through scientific publications in the field of organic chemistry,
• presents a research plan with a clear independent focus that is assessed to be able to serve as a basis for external funding,
• demonstrates very good knowledge of English with good communicative ability,
• demonstrates the ability to plan, develop, and conduct teaching.

It is advantageous if the applicant:

• can be assessed to complement and strengthen research and education within the department,
• demonstrates the ability to establish, innovate, and develop the relevant research area as well as the ability to obtain external research funding,
• has documented experience of leadership,
• has experience in planning, developing, and conducting teaching,
• demonstrates good collaborative skills, perseverance, and personal maturity,
• and the ability to organize and structure work.

In the appointment of teachers, in addition to what follows from the Higher Education Ordinance, Lund University's employment regulations apply.

We expect that a non-Swedish-speaking employee will acquire sufficient knowledge of Swedish within three years to be able to teach and communicate with the university's various bodies in this language.

Promotion

To be promoted from assistant professor to university lecturer, a language level of B1* must be achieved in Swedish.

An assistant professor should, after application, be promoted to a permanent position as university lecturer if they are qualified for such a position and are also deemed suitable in an assessment according to the assessment criteria set by the Faculty of Science for promotion to university lecturer. The assistant professor can only apply for promotion once.
