About Tornedalsteatern

Tornedalsteatern is one of Sweden's minority theaters – the only cultural institution for Tornedalians, Kvens, and Lantalaiset. A kind of national stage!

With meänkieli as our foundation, we create professional performances and offer theater activities for children, youth, and adults in our member municipalities: Haparanda, Övertorneå, Pajala, Kiruna, and Gällivare.

Tornedalsteatern is organized as a non-profit association that works project-based with a small, dynamic, and versatile team. The base is in Pajala, where we have our own stage and the hub of production. The theater regularly collaborates with performing artists from Sweden, Norway, and Finland and produces two professional performances each year that tour in Norrbotten.

Our vision: Tornedalsteatern is an obvious part of the cultural life in Sweden and the Nordic region – through Tornedalian identity, culture, and language.

Who are we looking for?

Tornedalsteatern is looking for a person with experience in leadership and their own artistic practice. You need to have broad experience in the production processes of performing arts as well as Swedish and/or Nordic theater life. You could be a director, actor, playwright, or musician, and your profession will be part of the role.

• the challenge of creating a repertoire based on the language, culture, and history of Tornedalen
• developing contacts with various partners both in Sweden and the rest of the Nordic countries

Meritorious:

• Knowledge of Sweden's national minorities and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Tornedalians, Kvens, and Lantalaiset

What can Tornedalsteatern offer?

A unique assignment with an organization in strong development. The place of employment is Pajala in central Norrbotten. Here, life is close. Close to nature, hunting, fishing, and the doors of community life are always open. Despite Pajala being a small community, there is good public service and a good range of offerings.

The assignment Artistic Leader

You will have overall responsibility for the theater's artistic profile, the professional activities as well as amateur productions and the educational activities of the theater leaders.

Together with the administrative leader, you will be responsible for planning the activities within the theater's budget framework, organizational development, and reporting jointly to the board.

You will lead the artistic staff, primarily in the professional productions. An important part of the assignment in the coming years is to work for increased funding, both public grants and increased collaborations with the business community.

In 2029, Kiruna will be the European Capital of Culture. One of your important tasks will be to plan and lead Tornedalsteatern's contributions to the Capital of Culture program.
