Assistant Professor in Data-Driven Evolution and Biodiversity
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) announces a position as Assistant Professor in Data-Driven Evolution and Biodiversity in aquatic or terrestrial environments. For more information about the environments, read here (#).
Through research, teaching, environmental analysis, and collaboration within the agricultural sector, SLU develops knowledge for sustainable use of natural resources, sustainable societal development, and good living conditions on our planet.
SLU offers excellent access to world-class infrastructures for bioscience research. The university is engaged in and utilizes national molecular biological infrastructures, including platforms at SciLifeLab for genomics, proteomics, imaging, bioinformatics, and high-performance computing. SLU provides access to large amounts of data that can be used for the development of machine learning and automated analysis relevant to the focus of the position. Long data series are available from field trials and research stations across the country as well as environmental monitoring programs with associated national data stewardship. SLU is also part of the Swedish Biodiversity Infrastructure (SBDI) and manages Artportalen.
Data-driven life science (DDLS) uses data, computational methods, and artificial intelligence to study biological systems and processes at all levels – from molecular structures and cellular mechanisms to human health and global ecosystems. SciLifeLab and the Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), coordinated by SciLifeLab, aims to recruit and train the next generation of researchers in data-driven life science and build world-leading expertise in computational and data science in Sweden. The program is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) with a total of 3.3 billion SEK (approximately 350 million USD) over 12 years.
The DDLS program funds 50 outstanding young research group leaders ("Fellows"), over 210 postdoctoral positions, and has established a graduate school for 260 doctoral students, as well as industrial doctoral students and postdocs. Fellows are recruited to the 11 participating host universities/organizations but are all part of the DDLS program, which focuses on four strategic areas: cell and molecular biology, evolution and biodiversity, precision medicine and diagnostics, and pathogen transmission and infection biology. For more information, visit: www.scilifelab.se/data-driven (www.scilifelab.se/data-driven).
Each DDLS Fellow receives a recruitment package of 17 million SEK (approximately 1.6 million USD) for a five-year period, covering their own salary as well as resources for, for example, doctoral students and postdocs. The positions are tenure track positions at the host organizations, which are responsible for long-term faculty appointments after an evaluation.
The future of life science is data-driven. Do you want to help lead the development? Welcome to apply for this unique program!

Subject Description
Data-driven evolution and biodiversity encompass research that utilizes large datasets from techniques such as high-throughput sequencing of genomes and biomes, continuous video and audio recording in nature, high-resolution imaging of biological samples, and large-scale remote monitoring of organisms or habitats. Applicants are expected to have a strong computational profile with a focus on innovative development and application of data-driven methods using machine learning, AI, or similar techniques.
The subject pertains to research within the broad field of evolution and biodiversity with a strong computational profile. The overarching aim is for the subject area to lead to innovative development and/or use of new data-driven methods based on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational techniques. The specific subject focuses on ecological and evolutionary processes that generate and shape the diversity of plants, animals, and/or microorganisms and how these affect ecosystems. Diversity should be interpreted broadly and includes taxonomic, genomic, and functional aspects. The subject may encompass various scales of biological systems, from molecules and genes to populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes, and biomes in aquatic or terrestrial environments.
