Are you our next Animal Welfare Officer? Seize the opportunity to join our team!

The role of an Animal Welfare Officer is both developing and exciting.

You will have the chance to work in an important and meaningful role alongside experienced and helpful colleagues.

The Veterinary and Animal Welfare Unit is one of four units within the Rural Development Department. We are 17 people in the unit and are responsible for animal welfare, the supervision of dogs and cats, approval of animal barns, food and feed within primary production, infection control, animal health personnel, and other veterinary tasks. We do this by communicating internally and externally, for example with industry organizations, animal owners, and the media. Jönköping County is a distinct agricultural region with a high animal density, and many of the tasks are related to farm animals. We make intervention decisions in the areas of animal welfare, infection control, and food safety. The unit is also responsible for parts of the County Administrative Board's emergency preparedness issues.

Job Responsibilities

As an Animal Welfare Officer, you will conduct inspections based on animal welfare legislation for farm animals and various types of pets in Jönköping County. The inspections take place both on-site with the animal owner and remotely. After inspection visits, you will prepare inspection reports and register inspection results in the case management system, as well as write any decisions. The job responsibilities may also include, among other things, permit assessments for animal-related activities, monitoring compliance with the supervision of dogs and cats law, transport inspections, and vehicle inspections, as well as executing animal confiscations.

Part of the job involves responding to public inquiries and handling incoming complaints. The job responsibilities also include collaboration with various stakeholders such as the public, animal keepers, other authorities, and organizations.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with relevant and suitable academic education, such as animal science or a program in ethology and animal welfare.

Since travel within the county is a natural part of the job, a B driver's license for a manual transmission vehicle is required. It is important that you have a good ability to express yourself well in Swedish, both verbally and in writing. The job requires good computer skills and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. You also need to be able to familiarize yourself with and use various data systems and programs. Experience with case management systems such as Platina, the Swedish Board of Agriculture's animal welfare control register (DSK), and Falken is an advantage.

Previous work experience in animal welfare case management or other regulatory work with inspection activities is also advantageous. Experience with transport inspections and vehicle inspections is a plus. Work experience in animal husbandry, particularly regarding farm animals, is also a merit.

We place great emphasis on your personal qualities. You need to be able to communicate in a correct and pedagogical manner and have a good ability to collaborate, both with colleagues and animal keepers. The work as an Animal Welfare Officer can at times be mentally demanding; you will encounter people and animals in vulnerable situations, and encounters with friction may occur. We prefer that you have experience in calmly and respectfully meeting and addressing people, regardless of their emotional state. It is also important that you have personal maturity, are secure in yourself, and can distinguish between the personal and the professional, as well as ask for support and help when needed.

You need to remain neutral and objective in assessments and ensure that decisions are well-founded and legally secure according to current legislation. As the work is variable and largely event-driven, it is important that you can be flexible and have the ability to prioritize and compromise when conditions change. We prefer that you enjoy working towards clearly defined goals and are motivated to achieve them.

Conditions

We are looking for two new employees, one of whom will work full-time on a permanent basis. We apply a 6-month probationary period as a rule for our permanent positions. Start date as soon as agreed.

The other position is full-time and is a temporary position for approximately 12 months. Start date as soon as agreed.

Other

Interviews will be conducted starting from week 11. We use work samples during the recruitment process.
