The Department of Preservation and Digitization is responsible for the preservation of the university library, digitization processes, collection care, accessibility, and bookbinding support.

The department currently has 19 employees who all work closely with the physical collections (conservators, bookbinders, librarians, library assistants, digitization coordinators, photographers, and technicians).

The preservation work of the university library is a central mission for the operation, and as a legal deposit library, we have a statutory preservation mandate for the extensive physical collections of various kinds.

We are now seeking temporary reinforcement for our preservation team in the form of an engaged and experienced bookbinder, well acquainted with bookbinding work from libraries and/or archives.

Job Responsibilities and Areas of Responsibility

Your daily work will consist of repairing library bindings (usually dated from 1900 onwards), manufacturing boxes, rebinding journals, and other tasks related to bookbinding and preservation activities at a university library. The materials vary in age and character, and dust, dirt, and heavy lifting may occur.

Requirements for Employment:

• Education in hand bookbinding with verified diploma or equivalent experience assessed as equivalent by the employer (not machine bookbinding or study circle courses)
• Previous work experience in hand bookbinding from libraries and/or archives
• Good Swedish in spoken and written form

Desirable Qualifications:

• Education in historical bookbinding techniques
• Experience in preventive measures and condition assessment of bound materials and loose documents, e.g., prior to digitization and provision in reading rooms
• Experience in mold remediation
• Driving license B for manual transmission

Other Information

The position is a special fixed-term employment for 7 months at 100 percent. The position may potentially be adjusted to a lower percentage (at least 50 percent) with a corresponding longer employment period. Start date is desired as soon as possible.
