As a team leader in the National Forest Inventory, you will work outdoors in all weather conditions and be part of a varied and educational fieldwork – a job for those who love freedom, nature, and new experiences.
About the job
As a team leader, you are responsible for the practical collection of data that contributes to Sweden's official forest statistics. The work is varied and responsible, primarily consisting of data collection in the field. The inventory is conducted in teams of three and covers the whole of Sweden. As a team leader, you have the ultimate responsibility for planning travel, accommodation, and work hours in the best possible way, although it is beneficial to handle this collectively within the team. It is also the team leader's responsibility to introduce new employees to the tasks in a pedagogical manner and ensure that all areas are inventoried according to the instructions. You will be seasonally employed during all or part of the inventory period, which usually runs from the end of April to October. To be offered employment, you must be able to work at least in June, July, and August, but we would prefer if you can work the entire season. New team leaders will receive training consisting of theory and practice, some of which takes place before the season starts. More information about the work can be found on our website.
Your background
We are looking for someone who has previous experience working in the National Forest Inventory's field inventory or equivalent inventory. Previous experience in fieldwork leadership is an advantage, and we value an interest in forests and nature. It is important that you are enthusiastic and appreciate the freedom and opportunities we offer with this job. To be considered for the position, you need to be motivated to take on the leadership responsibility. Since driving is part of the job, it is important that you can drive a car safely and that your driving ability is not affected by, for example, medication or illness. To work as a team leader at the institution, you must be able to walk ten kilometers a day in unpaved terrain with a backpack weighing about 15 kg and enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions. We place great emphasis on personal qualities. To be offered employment, you need to:
- have a valid driver's license (B)
- have good physical condition and experience working or spending time in the forest
- have the ability to live and work away from home for long periods, usually 8 days in a row
- have excellent teamwork skills
- have a good ability to interpret text and express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish (instruction texts and internal training are provided in Swedish)
About us
The Department of Forest Resource Management conducts education and research in the fields of forest planning, remote sensing, forest inventory and sampling, forest mathematical statistics, and landscape studies. The department is also responsible for the implementation of ongoing environmental analysis programs such as the National Forest Inventory, National Targeted Forest Damage Inventory, National Inventories of Landscapes in Sweden, Terrestrial Habitat Monitoring, and Butterfly and Bumblebee Inventories. The activities combine research and environmental analysis in interdisciplinary projects, providing unique opportunities to develop holistic concepts for sustainable use of natural resources. We have about 110 employees and an additional 90 seasonal employees during the summer months in our field inventories. More information can be found at www.slu.se/srh.
