Are you a nurse with an interest in surgery and emergency care?
Do you want to contribute to the future of healthcare? Then you are the one we are looking for!
You are offered
- a stable team with broad competence within the nursing and assistant nursing groups, where we support each other and have fun together
- a safe and welcoming workplace where well-being and patient care are the focus, attracting former students and interns back
- opportunities for career development with various career paths, including academic routes and clinical further education, as well as rotation to other departments and the emergency department within our theme
- individual competence plans and present leadership to promote a balanced and sustainable work life.
Of course, you will also benefit from our general benefits that Karolinska University Hospital offers you.
About the position
KAVA is a surgical emergency care unit with 19 beds for patients with acute conditions within surgery. Admissions occur from the emergency department around the clock. Our mission is to monitor, investigate, diagnose, and treat acutely ill patients. Since those cared for by us are rarely fully evaluated, a large part of our work is to observe changes and signs of deterioration. Common reasons for seeking us are various forms of trauma, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, and abdominal pain. Common diagnoses associated with this include commotio, ulcer, cholecystitis, cholangitis, pancreatitis, ileus, appendicitis, and diverticulitis. This means that pre- and postoperative care, pain relief, fluid balance monitoring, and assessment of vital parameters are a significant part of our work. We also have the opportunity for continuous monitoring of vital parameters in the form of “spot checks” for those who have a greater need for frequent checks. Our average length of stay is about two days. Read more about us here.
As a nurse with us, you are responsible for the care in your work team. You work independently, have a critically reflective approach, and can handle complex situations and examinations. In the position, you will apply medical priorities and contribute to the development of nursing work. As an experienced nurse, it also includes mentoring nursing students and newly hired colleagues or working as a lead nurse in the unit.
Most shifts are staffed by a lead nurse in addition to the teams that manage the inflow and outflow of patients and support the teams as needed. At KAVA, we have a nursing leader and nursing specialist who also work with patients and drive nursing development, focusing on quality education and the surgical patient.
For us, person-centered care is a cornerstone of our working method; we currently have person-centered handovers between day/evening shifts where we report inside the patient's room and where the patient is seen as an obvious part of the team. We are also working on changing the traditional rounds by rounding with the patient for increased participation, information, and efficiency.
We are looking for someone who
- has the ability to understand another person's perspective or situation without taking over their feelings
- easily adapts to changing circumstances, can quickly change viewpoints and approaches, and sees opportunities in changes
- works well with others and relates to them in a responsive and smooth manner. You listen, communicate, and resolve conflicts constructively
- is calm and controlled in stressful or pressurized situations. You maintain a realistic perspective and focus on the right things.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Licensed nurse
Desirable:
- Two years of experience as a nurse
- Mentorship training
