Our Operations
Within the department of orthopedics and hand surgery, we examine, care for, and operate on patients with diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. We provide both highly specialized care and basic surgery, both urgent and planned, in hand surgery, fracture surgery, prosthetic surgery, shoulder, knee, foot, and spine surgery, as well as pediatric orthopedics. The majority of our surgeries are performed in orthopedic surgery where we conduct both day surgery and inpatient surgery. In addition, a large number of surgeries are also performed in the outpatient clinics' own surgical unit.
The department includes a large ward and two outpatient clinics. The orthopedic ward 70AB is located on the top two floors of building 70. Here, we care for patients from about 15 years old with all types of orthopedic and hand surgical injuries. Most patients are from our region, but we also have national intake for hand, spine, and prosthetic surgery, as well as advanced trauma orthopedics such as pelvic injuries. The length of stay with us is usually 2–5 days, but can vary from one day to several weeks. We work person-centered in multidisciplinary teams consisting of nurses, nursing assistants, pharmacists, junior doctors, and specialist doctors. We also have invaluable support from our ward pharmacists, occupational and physiotherapists, and social workers.
Your Mission
As a nursing assistant, you will have a rotating position primarily located in the ward. You will be a relieving resource for the nursing teams and will independently perform tasks within both basic and specific nursing care. Examples of tasks include:
- admitting patients to the ward
- transporting patients to and from surgery
- preparing and administering medications (tablets, inhalations, infusions, and injections)
- performing venipuncture and blood cultures
- placing peripheral venous catheters
- managing central access
- assisting with larger wound dressings
- conducting NEWS assessments
- placing urinary catheters
- performing EKGs
- preparing medications for discharge
- restocking medication carts as needed
During your employment, you will also shadow and assist doctors in the department and be introduced to standard junior doctor tasks in the ward, outpatient clinic, and during on-call work in the orthopedic emergency department. With supervision, you will independently assess patients in the emergency department as well as in the orthopedic and hand surgery outpatient clinic. Time permitting, there will also be opportunities to attend and assist during surgeries.
Your Qualifications
We are looking for you who are a medical student and have completed semesters 9 or 10 of the medical program at a Swedish university. You have a pronounced interest in orthopedics and/or hand surgery and want to deepen your understanding of these specialties. As a person, you are flexible and proactive. You have good communication skills, are structured, and can easily collaborate in a multidisciplinary team. Previous experience in healthcare work, preferably as a nursing assistant or caregiver, is meritorious. Experience in orthopedics is a plus.
We Offer
We offer an educational position as a nursing assistant aimed at strengthening your clinical development and providing you with a broader understanding of orthopedic care and its surgery. The position is full-time during all or part of the period June–August 2026, and we hope you can work at least six weeks during this period. The position primarily involves work in our ward but also includes work in our outpatient clinics. Regular working hours are scheduled for weekdays, but on-call work may occur.
