Unit Manager Wildlife Management

The Department of Nature and Wildlife is responsible for the management of biodiversity and ecosystems and acts as the national hunting and wildlife authority. We develop knowledge bases, guidance, and regulatory frameworks to achieve Swedish and international goals, monitor effects, and allocate government funds for the protection and management of valuable nature. We represent the state as a property owner in protected areas and work in broad collaboration with authorities, research, industry, landowners, civil society, and international actors.

The Wildlife Management Unit supports regional and local wildlife management. The unit, with 13 employees, is responsible for national management plans, guidance, regulations, and collaboration councils. We manage grants to county administrative boards for predator management and wildlife damage. The development of wolf management is one of our largest assignments.

We are looking for a unit manager who, together with other employees, wants to lead, develop, and follow up on the work of the unit.

Your Responsibilities

As a unit manager, you will work on behalf of the department head to lead, develop, and follow up on the work of the unit. You will be part of the department's management team, where you contribute to the overall goals of the department and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. You will have overall responsibility for processes, results, staffing, as well as the unit's finances and agreements with partners and contractors.

The unit manager has personnel and work environment responsibility for the unit's employees and ensures that the unit has the necessary competence to fulfill its assignments and has the ability to create clarity and direction in the work. In your role, you will harness employee engagement and ensure that they have the right conditions to perform their work. You will contribute to a good work climate, participation, and good collaboration both internally and externally, as well as quality assure the unit's deliveries and represent the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in external contexts, such as through media.

Your Competence

We are looking for someone with relevant academic education, documented managerial experience from government operations, and broad experience in wildlife management in Sweden. Experience in government work within the wildlife area and roles that require balancing conflicting interests is an advantage.

Requirements for Employment

  • Academic degree with a relevant focus for the position (for example, in biology, law, political science, etc.)
  • Managerial experience
  • Several years of experience working as a civil servant
  • Media experience and the ability to represent the authority externally.
  • Solid knowledge of Swedish wildlife management and its actors nationally and regionally
  • Documented experience in collaboration and dialogue with interest organizations and other stakeholders
  • Experience and competence to handle politically driven issues of great societal relevance
  • Excellent skills in speaking and writing in Swedish and English
  • Good computer skills with office programs.
  • Driver's license B is required.

Meritorious

  • Managerial experience in a government agency.
  • Experience working within or in close collaboration with politically governed organizations at the national level.
  • Experience in working with hunting legislation.

Personal Characteristics

You are attentive, can build trust, and contribute to good collaboration. A clear leader who is results- and goal-oriented and wants to develop the organization. You can see the big picture and remain flexible as circumstances change. The unit's areas of operation are current and highlighted, which requires you to be comfortable handling charged situations in, for example, media and larger meetings.

About the Employment

The position is a permanent full-time employment that normally begins with a six-month probationary period. The place of employment is Stockholm or Östersund. The position may involve occasional domestic travel and possibly some international travel. Start date as soon as possible by agreement. We apply individual salary setting.
