Director of Health and Medical Services

About the Position

The role of Director of Health and Medical Services at Region Gotland is broad and crucial for the future of the island.

As part of the executive management team, you will lead the healthcare organization – from primary care, dental care, psychiatry, and hospitals to the interface with elderly care – responsible for ensuring that the residents of Gotland receive safe, accessible, and sustainable care. The starting point is strong, with a stable management team, engaged employees, and high trust from patients. At the same time, the organization faces challenges in securing workforce supply, achieving financial balance, and building a strong and sustainable emergency preparedness structure.

Gotland's geographical location and combined role as both a region and a municipality create unique conditions for close collaboration and a holistic perspective – but also a need for long-term planning, coordination, and wise prioritization. The demographic development with more elderly and fewer younger people demands new working methods, increased digitalization, and deeper collaborations between healthcare, education, and social services. Preparedness is a central issue – building robust structures for crisis and continuity is crucial to meet Gotland's vulnerability during disruptions. There are great opportunities here through short decision-making paths, strong community, and a genuine desire to develop healthcare, allowing for rapid change with clear effects.

In the coming years, the focus will be on further developing structures, culture, and leadership – strengthening the organization, developing sustainable processes, and shaping the future competency strategy. Your focus will also be on building strong relationships with the municipality, the healthcare region of Stockholm, and national networks such as SKR. In the long term, the goal is to drive the development of future healthcare in Gotland, participate in the national debate on equitable care and funding, and create an organization that includes emergency preparedness work and is sustainable and self-sufficient during disruptions. You will initiate strategic changes that strengthen Gotland's unique conditions and ensure high-quality care for the residents.

This is a role for you who want to influence the whole in a unique region, drive real development, and contribute to the well-being of all of Gotland – today and in the future.

Your Main Responsibilities

As Director of Health and Medical Services, you have overall responsibility for leading, developing, and ensuring that Gotland's health and medical care is conducted in line with political goals and the needs of the residents. You serve as an important link between politics and operations – translating decisions into action and creating conditions for long-term quality, accessibility, and safety in care. The role includes leading the management team, supporting line managers, and ensuring a well-functioning management system that drives systematic quality and improvement work.

You are an active part of Region Gotland's executive management and contribute to the region's collective development. The role also includes responsibility for crisis management, finance, and resource utilization, where you balance demands for efficiency with high quality requirements. A central part of the role is to promote collaboration – between operations, with other regions, and with national actors – as well as to strengthen the organization's ability to change and innovate. Through a present and trust-based leadership, you build trust among employees, politicians, and citizens, and drive the development towards sustainable and future-oriented care in Gotland.

Who Are You?

To succeed in this role, you have extensive leadership experience at a senior management level, leading managers in a complex and large organization. You have solid experience in leading health and medical care at a strategic level and an understanding of regionally driven health and medical care. We are looking for someone with experience in governance, implementation, and follow-up in a large and complex organization, as well as an understanding of preparedness and crisis issues. You have experience leading change and development work alongside other functions, with good results. We also see that you have an understanding of politically governed organizations and the role of politics.

We are looking for someone with an academic degree, preferably in a health and medical profession.

It is advantageous if you have experience working in a politically governed organization, as well as experience leading an emergency preparedness and crisis organization, preferably within the health and medical sector. Furthermore, we would like you to have experience representing an organization in external networks, collaboration groups, or national partnerships. Experience in municipal health and medical care and media management is also advantageous.

You are a relationship-building leader who fosters trust and collaboration through openness, responsiveness, and presence. You thrive in dialogue – both with employees, politicians, and partners – and communicate clearly, respectfully, and with the ability to create understanding. With an analytical perspective and strategic thinking, you identify challenges and find solutions that work in practice. You are results-oriented, action-oriented, and have the ability to drive change with a focus on the whole. At the same time, you meet new situations with energy and adaptability, maintain calm under pressure, and inspire others to see opportunities even in complexity.

About the Organization

The Health and Medical Services Administration belongs to the Health and Medical Services Committee and is responsible for all publicly funded health and medical care in Gotland, except for nursing services within schools, home care, and special accommodations. The administration has approximately 1,500 employees. The Health and Medical Services Administration in Gotland works to provide care on equal terms regardless of where people live on the island. It is about safety, respect, integrity, and accessibility. You should always be treated in a dignified and correct manner.

Region Gotland is not only Gotland's largest employer; it is also the only region in Sweden that has municipal, health and medical care responsibilities, and regional development responsibilities within the same organization. This, along with the island's location, creates conditions for good collaboration across operational areas.

There are over 7,000 employees who together work for a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving community for everyone who visits, lives, and works in Gotland. They are driving the creation of a safe and sustainable development across the entire island.
