The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and are now looking for more team members. Our main goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the cycle of crime. If we succeed, society becomes safer for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, remand centres, and client transports.

Job Description

As a correctional officer, you will be part of a team where you have daily contact with clients. Working in the transport unit means your main task is to transport individuals deprived of their liberty, on behalf of the Prison and Probation Service and other authorities. The job also includes surveillance during, for example, court hearings and hospital visits. The varied assignments mean that working hours may vary from day to day.

Working as a correctional officer means you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human development.

You will start your employment at the workplace where you will receive a three-week introduction. After a period of service, you will be offered a place in the correctional officer's basic training, which is mandatory and lasts for 8 weeks. You will receive a salary throughout the training period. Continuous assessments for permanent employment will be conducted during the probationary period.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be confident, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you run the operations, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.

We are looking for candidates who have:

• Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not equivalent to employment
• A complete high school education or other education combined with work experience that the Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
• Good computer skills
• A B driver's license for manual transmission vehicles and driving experience

It is advantageous if you have:

• Work experience in corrections, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
• Relevant language skills

We have high demands on our employees' security and confidentiality awareness. Therefore, we conduct a security check before deciding on your employment with us. Some positions are classified as security-sensitive, and in such cases, we conduct a security investigation with a registry check before making an employment decision. For positions with higher security classification, you need to be a Swedish citizen, but having a foreign background is welcome.

The employment includes mandatory correctional officer training. It may be conducted in another location. The Prison and Probation Service operates around the clock, all year round. This means you will work days, evenings, and weekends. Some schedules involve night work.
