Research Engineer in Underwater Capabilities

FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe’s leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence and is tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, as well as investigations for total defense and to support disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. The activities are carried out on behalf of primarily the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have approximately 1400 employees, of which over 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.

Do you want to help strengthen underwater capabilities through research and analysis? Do you want to create the defense systems of the future with innovative solutions and be part of an exciting reality at the forefront of technology? Dive into a dynamic world as a research engineer!

About the Position

In the role of research engineer, you will work in a team conducting research and providing expert support to enhance the Armed Forces' capabilities in underwater warfare. This includes work on surface ships' and submarines' sonar systems for detection, localization, and classification, as well as issues related to acoustic signature management and communication.

The research questions may lead you to work with simulations, experiments, evaluations, and expert support. Depending on your skills and interests, the focus may be on physical issues, method development, system design, troubleshooting, or project management.

About the Unit

You will work together with researchers in underwater technology in a varied environment, where experiments may take place both in our laboratory and at sea. We work with both commercial simulation software and our own code development. We work in project form, where each employee contributes their expertise, and together we create systems and functions that are in demand to strengthen Sweden's defense capabilities.

Do you have the skill profile we need?

We are looking for someone who has:

  • An academic education equivalent to a master's degree in engineering, with a focus on acoustics, electronics, embedded systems, or signal processing.
  • Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing, in both Swedish and English.

Meritorious:

  • Experience in defense research or work with acoustic underwater systems.

As a person, you are flexible and responsible for your parts in the projects and have the ability to also consider the best interests of the whole so that our common goals are achieved. You have initiative, can break down goals into tasks, and deliver results. You enjoy working both independently and collaboratively with others. We place great importance on personal qualities.

What do we offer you?

FOI offers a unique workplace where you get the opportunity to work on what is important for both total defense and society as a whole. FOI is a government authority under the Ministry of Defence and is one of Europe’s leading research institutes in defense and security.

The position is a permanent employment that may start with a six-month probationary period.

We consciously work for a good work environment with a good balance between work and private life. In addition, we offer a range of benefits. Read more about what it is like to work with us: https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html (https://www.foi.se/jobba-hos-oss.html)
