Laboratory Assistant for the Lung Biology Research Group

Workplace Description

The Lung Biology research group at the Department of Experimental Medical Science, led by Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant.

The main task of the group is to investigate the mechanisms behind chronic lung diseases such as allergic asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In these diseases, there is a remodeling of the lung structure, and effective treatments that can reverse the pathological changes in these conditions are currently lacking. Through our research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of fundamental molecular mechanisms by mapping how the interaction between specific lung cells, immune cells, and the surrounding extracellular matrix contributes to disease progression.

Job Responsibilities and Areas of Responsibility

The tasks include working with mouse models to investigate the interaction between immune cells and stromal cells in the lungs during allergic inflammation. The main analytical methods are flow cytometry (multiparameter), microscopy, and in vitro cultures. The work involves performing analytical work, interpreting results, and compiling data.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position include:

  • The applicant must have a master's degree in molecular biology, biomedicine, or equivalent. A very good ability to express oneself well in English, both spoken and written, is required in daily work. The person should be able to work independently with very good collaboration skills.
  • FELASA-certified laboratory training for animal handling
  • Independent work with cell culture
  • Documented experience with the following methods:
    • Flow cytometry
    • Cytotoxicity assays
    • Gene editing (e.g., CRISPR/Cas-9)
    • Western Blot

Desirable qualifications for the position include:

  • Knowledge in immunology
  • Ability to work with relevant software programs (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Flowjo, ImageJ, GraphPad Prism) to compile and describe research results.
  • Ability to work independently.

The position is a fixed-term employment for twelve months at 100 percent, starting on 2025-08-04.
