Department of Culture and Aesthetics

The Department of Culture and Aesthetics is a large and dynamic department within the Faculty of Humanities with approximately 120 employees, including around fifty doctoral students across five subjects.

Art History at Stockholm University is part of the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, along with the subjects of intellectual history, literary studies, musicology, theater studies, curating, and cultural heritage studies. The department offers a four-year doctoral education in art history. Research in the field of art history is characterized by a focus on early modern, modern, and contemporary art and design, architecture and theory, as well as cultural heritage studies and curating. In all these areas, the art history subject at the university has good connections to museums, art galleries, authorities, and other institutions and actors in the surrounding society. Thus, the Department of Culture and Aesthetics offers one of the broadest research environments in the field of art history in Sweden.

Project Description

We are seeking 1 junior researcher to strengthen the local research environment at the department by developing an independent research project and writing competitive applications for external research funding. The successful candidate will have an initial meeting with the research secretary to outline a plan for the work. Art History offers mentorship from senior researchers during the employment period. The position is part of promoting future competence supply and creating conditions for further qualifications for the successful candidate.

Job Responsibilities

The job responsibilities consist of writing competitive applications for external research funding for an art history research project with the intention that the project will be located at the art history department of the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, actively participating in the Higher Seminar in Art History and in the Interdisciplinary Seminar, as well as presenting the project plan at the Interdisciplinary Seminar.

Eligibility Requirements

A researcher is primarily employed for research and must have obtained a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is assessed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.

Assessment Criteria

We are looking for candidates with a doctoral degree in art history or related fields. The doctoral degree must have been obtained no more than five years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, elected positions within trade unions, or service in total defense. In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific skill and potential in the proposed research project. Special emphasis will also be placed on personal suitability to carry out the tasks within the specified time, which is why providing contact information for referees in the application is of great importance.

About the Position

The position is temporary and is for full-time for one month or part-time for two months. Start date during the autumn semester of 2025.
