Research and Development Engineer in Pyrolysis
RISE Research Institutes of Sweden ABNorrbottens län, Piteå

to apply for the job
Sweden is facing a massive transformation of its energy system, and RISE plays a natural role in this work. Together with industry and the public sector, we develop competitive solutions and conditions that drive sustainable development forward. But we need more people. Welcome to submit your application!
As a result of the sustainable transition, there is a great interest in producing chemicals and fuels from bio-based and circular raw materials. In Piteå, RISE conducts research and development in the area of thermochemical conversion processes (combustion, gasification, pyrolysis). The work is largely carried out in our dedicated pilot plants and often in project collaborations with customers and academic partners as well as with other parts of RISE. Our projects often encompass both theoretical modeling and experimental campaigns, and we develop new methods and experimental setups to address current research questions. We also perform field assignments on-site with industrial customers. In recent years, our operations have expanded significantly, and we are now looking for a research and development engineer for our pyrolysis group.
About the role As a research and development engineer with us, you will be part of our competence team in pyrolysis, an area where we have several funded and ongoing projects. You will join various project groups working to implement projects and assignments primarily in pyrolysis but also in other thermochemical processes.
Your responsibilities include:
- Planning and preparation of experimental campaigns
- Execution of experimental campaigns, both independently and as part of a team
- Sampling and analysis of samples
- Results compilation and documentation
- Maintenance and development of experimental setups and/or analytical instruments and related methods
Depending on experience, ability, and interest, you may also lead projects either directly or in the long term. The position is located in Piteå.
Who are you? To be successful in the role of research and development engineer with us, we believe you have good collaboration skills, are reliable, driven, and practical, and can work independently. Since research and development work often requires us to revise our plans based on the latest results, you need to be flexible. As we develop cutting-edge technology, it is important that you are open and always want to grow by learning new things.
We are looking for someone who is a university or master’s engineer, for example in mechanical, chemical, or energy engineering, or has acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways. Experimental experience and knowledge in pyrolysis and/or other thermochemical conversion processes (combustion, gasification) are advantageous.
You have good computer skills, primarily in the Office suite. You communicate well, both in writing and verbally, in English. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.
Are we right for each other? At RISE, we embrace diversity, and we are convinced that diversity contributes to an innovative environment where we collectively challenge boundaries and develop new knowledge and skills for the future. With us, passionate problem solvers come together to tackle some of the world's most important and perhaps most enjoyable challenges. We cannot promise you an easy job, but what we can promise you is a group of engaged colleagues and some truly exciting societal challenges to address. You will work in a dynamic environment that offers you opportunities for both professional and personal development. With us, you will have the chance to make a real difference. Welcome to Sweden's research institute and innovation partner!
Welcome to submit your application! If this sounds interesting and you want to know more, please contact unit manager Anna Malou Petersson at phone number: 010-516 61 91 or email: anna.malou.petersson@ri.se. The application deadline is April 21, 2025.
